We just bought a home built in 1836 in Arlington. The entire first floor is centered around what is called the reception room. We have a kitchen, dining room, library, and family room. All have large doorways or large pocket doors.

I love it. We can still entertain large groups of people (60 would fit comfortably), but we can shut off spaces too.

I totally agree. Good flow is essential, but I hate the "modern" open floor plan trend.

I liked having a kitchen I could close off while cooking. The kids were in the child-proofed living and dining room and I could hear what they were up to, but I didn't have to worry about stepping on one or being grabbed while I was holding something hot and spill-y.
