Definitely a troll. There are a few who love to fake post pretending that they are disaffected Democrats. It's like their sad little disinformation campaign. Unfortunately they can't really contain themselves and so they are fairly easy to spot if you give them enough room to talk.

I will say now that my situation is a hypothetical, since people are starting to get worried about me. I didn't really mean to indicate otherwise but having re-read my post I think I unintentionally forgot an "if." I do drive and I've been registered to vote in Maryland since I turned 18. And Maryland is not currently subject to any voter restriction laws that I know of.

But if you think you can apply for a new, non-driver ID at a kiosk, or even an express office, you're dreaming. Same with changing from another state's ID to Maryland's. You need to go to one of the full-service MVA locations.

From where I live in Montgomery County, wmata.com's trip planner shows a minimum of 1 hour 15 minutes, ONE WAY, to get to the full-service MVA in Gaithersburg, using a Metrobus, a Metro train, and then a Ride-On bus. At a cost of $8.10 or $4.60 with SmarTrip.

So to go there to get a state-issued ID would take 2 1/2 hours NOT even counting the time spent at the actual facility, which in my experience has been shall we say substantial. This would have to be done during business hours (and, as an aside, the MVA was closed this past Monday AND this past SATURDAY in observance of Columbus Day) and could cost more than $16. Imagine you're a nanny during the day and waiting tables at night. Does this sound feasible to you?

Democrat. Disagree with the party's refusal to come up with a sound plan related to Medicare and Social Security, particularly the former. I don't know if it's just a head-in-the-sand issue or pandering.

I also think Democrats are too beholden to unions, just as the Republican Party is too beholden to big business.

Since we are talking about ID, here is an interesting, if only tangentially relevant, story:

DW is applying to begin SS benefits. She filled out the online application. However, she was born in Missouri, and MO is also the abbreviation for Morocco. Thanks to an anti-terrorism law that recently went into effect, she was flagged, and needs to show a birth certificate. We could not ind hers around our cluttered old house, so she contacted Missouri to get a replacement.

Now comes the second problem -- as a kid she changed the spelling of her name because she thought the original was old-fashioned. She has been consistent ever since then. But since her credit card does not match the certificate, they would not send it. Fortunately they were willing to send it to her brother. I think that is really weird, but at least it solved the problem.

My point, in case my wordiness has hidden it, is that ID can be a real pain, and these voter ID laws will cause far more problems than we have now (a few anecdotal cases of voter fraud in the entire country).

Dem here. I am concerned about free trade. I see all these jobs going overseas. It seems to me that job protectionism is a good idea. Can you hlep me understand why it is not?

Seems to me the only ones who like free trade that allows the outsourcing of jobs would be big business.

I am not referring here to the purchase of goods, solely jobs.

But all we hear about from both candidates is how small businesses create all the jobs, so how is this a problem?

(Yes, I'm being sarcastic, but it's worth remembering the next time someone goes on about helping small business create jobs that most of the jobs SHED are by small businesses too).

PP here, no mistake made. I was just relaying my recent experience voting last week in Fairfax, and yes, we're just one of 50 states, so I can't speak for other states. So I look forward to other states and the criminal voter suppression being invoked to be the next topic of discussion to over-complicate a rather basic subject.

NP here. I'll happily bring up an example from another state to "over-complicate" this subject. The problem isn't just getting transportation to the DMV or paying for an ID. The problem is having the paperwork to actually get the ID, as another PP alluded to.

Many older, rural, poorer blacks in the South were born at home and either don't have birth certificates or have mistakes on their certificates. As we become increasingly computerized and increasingly stringent in the laws, that becomes a problem. It even becomes a problem if your IDs don't exactly match -- for example, one says John Smith and another says John Q. Smith, which can be a problem for anyone.

And before you brush this off as a problem in stupid, backwards South Carolina -- these laws have a way of migrating around the country.

Republican (and Catholic) - I strongly support gay marriage and pro choice -- not for me personally -- but I think those issues are "faith based" and ultimately fall under the separation of Church and State for me.

I am also incredibly pissed at the amount of money spent on elections by all parties! Maybe I am terribly naive on this point, but it all boils down to who has a better-sexier ad campaign for many voters.
