I was wondering about this as well this year and hoping we get it. Got two weeks of Winter Break to cover.

All of you whiners and complainers can suck it. I am a Federal Employee and yes, I do make more than my civilian counterparts and I am also a veteran. I work hard for my salary and eNjoy all the perks and holiday's off that come with it.

I earn 8 hours and I sure as hell want Dec 24 as a Federal Holiday.

Spoken like someone who gets eight hours leave per pay period. Please remember that those of us at the starts of our careers take a lot longer to earn leave. Every little bit helps when you'd like to actually spend some time with your extended family.

Federal employee here and I agree with the poster you quoted. I dont see how one day can really affect your ability to plan. Just plan on taking leave and make your travel plans. If you end up getting the 24th off then you can dont record leave when you submit your time records for that pay period.

Another fed, and this is not how leave works in my office. If you submit for leave, the leave is debited when your leave slip is processed and not credited back if a day off is announced later. What we enter in our time records has no effect on the official leave calculations.

Wow, you can't amend or edit your leave to reflect the extra holiday? We can at my govt. office.

Does Obama have to be the one to give it? We got it two years ago, and we got the day after Thanksgiving the year before that. But I think it was our agency that made the decision, not sure if everyone else got it.

Fed workers are also denied many of the luxury perks you fat cat private sector employees are used to, like coffee and water and the occasional free lunch or holiday party picked up by your employer.

I think most people have a hard time with this as typically Government workers get more holidays and more vacation days than the average American worker. So don't be suprised to get a little hostility when asking for more.

Yup, theoretically we do, but lucky for me, given the overwhelming volume of work that I have and understaffing problems, I get to work them without getting paid. And my agency has no credit hours or comp time (other than travel), so I won't be getting the time back on another day.

Do the same people who insist others work 'without expectations; it's your job and take time off if you want it instead of expecting it'...

Do you also not tip?

well actually, not always. my husband works in the private sector and actually has more days off than i do (i am a newbie federal employee). they usually let staff go on the day before holidays by about 2pm or 3pm in his office. and yes, they have snow days too, and follow the feds. soooo...maybe everyone can just stop generalizing about private v. public sector employees. it really accomplishes nothing.

I'm with PPs. If you want to plan, plan to take a vacation day. Then if you don't have to use it you'll be pleasantly surprised.

When you post things like this, it makes you sound entitled. Which is red meat for people who think feds are overpaid, etc.

So you're saying there are people in the private sector who think Feds are overpaid? How does that even follow logically?
