Caddyshack is my DHs favorite movie, along with Stripes of course. My DS is not impressed with either.

My son is 3.5 and loves the Star Wars trilogy. Those were my personal favorites when I was a kid. We've also introduced him to Labrynth (gotta love Bowie in that movie) and The Dark Crystal. If you have a very sensitive child, those might be a little too dark, but DS loves them. We also tried Muppets Take Manhatten, but he got a little bored with that.

I can't wait until he's a little older and we can watch The Goonies together. The Monster Squad was another one of my favorites as a kid, but probably better suited to 7 or 8 and up.

I'm also kind of surprised how soft my kid is, compared to my generation at that age.

I tried to get her to watch the Phantom of the Opera with me, and the first time the music went ominous and the scenery went dark, she said she was scared and wanted to stop. And THEN she tried to put off bedtime every night that week by claiming she was afraid the Phantom was going to get her.

DS, 4, loves the original Scooby Doo cartoons. Yes, I know they're not movies, but they are really funny. We get them from Netflix.

He also loves Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, but he has to hide when the childcatcher is on the screen. Oh, and he likes the Muppets too, although he doesn't really get the jokes yet.

I used to watch lots of nature programs/movies when I was a kid, but DS is just getting to grips with the fact that animals eat other animals, so I think we'll leave those for a few years.

Ok, I would not let my 8 year watch this! The thing about pretty much all the PG movies from the 80's and 90's is that they are what we would call an intense PG-13 now. And the PG-13s from back then are like R-rated movies now--so off the table for any but the most mature thinking teen. I wouldn't want to sit through that scene of Sigourney Weaver writhing around orgasmically with my 8 yo DD, thanks, AWKWARD.

I'm the PP - I said I personally saw the first Back to the Future at 8. I saw Ghostbusters in the theater at 7. I also saw Return of the Jedi when I was 6.

Somehow, I came out the other side as a normal, well adjusted human being.

My daughter who is 6 probably cannot handle these movies right now. I had her watch a couple minutes of Return of the Jedi with me when it was on TV a few months back and she HATED it. And no way in HELL would I take her to see the current crop of super hero movies that some people think are OK for their kids.

But, I think we underestimate what our kids can handle sometimes...
