The reason that Bethesda and other affluent areas have larger Kindergarten classes is because 95% of the students come from wealthy homes and speak English and are able to help their children In my area of the county 50% of the students are ESOL and 50% are on free and reduced meals. So these students don't come to Kindergarten with all the benefits of those who live in affluent areas and families.

I'm not sure why you are so bitter. If you want smaller class sizes, move to my neighborhood in Silver Spring. It is cheaper, we have great ethnic restaurants and lots of diversity.

So, those who put less into the system take more out of the system. Sounds about right.

So do you think that your cleaning lady should pay more taxes than your BigLaw neighbor?

We are only as strong as our weakest link.

"[W]hen you’ve worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity, you do not slam it shut behind you. You reach back, and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed.” - Michelle Obama

I use a cleaning service because I keep it nice and legal but I bet the average cleaning lady could pay 100% of her income and not come close to my Big Law neighbor. However, of the cleaning ladies out there, subtract those who are illegal, those who don't report their income and those who rent, and I don't think they really create much of a sustainable tax base. Big Law neighbor is a much better bet if you're trying to raise revenue. As for your friend Michelle, she should put her money where her mouth is and donate everything to the less fortunate. She wastes more on a dress than most cleaning ladies earn in 3 months. She's a hypocrite.

Ann Romney spent 5x what Michelle Obama did on her dress for the convention. FIVE times.

Those who rent also pay property taxes, via their landlords.

Just how do these schools for poors work? Do the gang-banger parents come to back to school night? Is that uncomfortable for the "I'm really affluent, but love living in a poor neighborhood because its just so grounded" crowd? What happens if some MS-13's kid wants to have your kid over for a play date?

SS parents, can we all agree to just ignore this BS, so that the thread does not get derailed?? If this person is even for real (and if not, we all know she represents what some people really think), answering this ridiculous posts will not convince her to move to our neighborhood. And we wouldn't want her there anyway.

Bethesda has plenty of diverstiy - from Nepal to Chile to Rwanda. It's just an educated kind of diversity.

It is skin-color and cultural diversity - not economic diversity. Not the kind that makes people uncomfortable.

So the diversity is now grouped into a "comfortable" and "uncomfortable" types? And presumably the "comfortable" one is not sufficient? Must we strive for diversity that makes one uncomfortable?

The original post mentioned English as a native language to explain away the class size. That explanation fails on its face - there is a tremendous number of non-native english speakers in Bethesda. They learn English, do just fine, and never receive the extra benefits.

They have parents who likely read, write, and speak multiple languages fluently and who work professional jobs; they have food and warm clothing and books and computers at home; they travel during school breaks. They live in print-rich, ready-for-learning environments. They are not taking care of younger siblings after school, or going without meals on weekends because there is no free breakfast and lunch. Their parents are at home in the evenings and not working second or third jobs.

It's not just about language.

I agree, but don't you think 13:48 knows that already? Does she sound like someone who will ever come around to sharing your values? Don't drive yourself crazy over arguing with her.

Ashburton-PP, if you wantsmaller class sizes, come on over to Silver Spring. There are a lot of affluent people here just like you, as well as people nothing like you.

We love it here.

FYI, the FARMS child sitting in the seat next to the one my affluent son occupies comes from a family which pays the exact same MoCo property tax rates as you and I do. So enough about contributing less to the "system" from you. We all contribute the same, according to our property tax assessments.

I thought all of CC went to Rosemary Hills. I was told that those classes have more than 25 students.

CC kids also go to Somerset, Westbrook and Rock Creek Forest.
