And it raises several obvious questions:

1. Why do the anti-choice crowd think women who get pregnant unexpectedly "deserve" to have to raise the child? Why don't they feel the same way about the father - even if he is rapist? 2. How many of these GOP thugs would force their own daughter to carry a rape-induced pregnancy to term?

In case 1 or 2, the woman is obviously a whore (doubt it matters if she's his daughter), because she got pregnant. The pregnancy proves it wasn't a "legitimate" rape. Illegitimate child = illegitimate rape. Question #2 actually scares me a little. I can't imagine that family conversation.

Now Akin has claimed he meant to say "forcible rape," not "legitimate rape." In my mind, that's just as (if not even more) offensive.

I will be shocked if he doesn't pull out tomorrow and let the Missouri GOP pick someone new- McCaskill is likely not to benefit since this gaffe came when he can still pull out. Cornyn already said that they won't give him money and I'm sure other funders are pressuring him too.

NP here and I stopped reading at your post. I'll answer your question: they are women who think rape is something that cannot or will not happen to them or their children. They think that rape really does come down to "legitimate rape" (or rape rape, as Whoopi put it), where someone is raped at gun or knifepoint by a stranger, vs. "date rape" or "false accusation rape," where the woman may or may not have just "changed her mind." Or one of those things where a woman passes out at a party and is raped, they think that "doesn't count." or is "not the same." Well, it may not be "the same," but it is still rape. Only, these women are SO SURE it could never happen to them, either because they don't drink, don't associate with the kind of people who would rape them if they did drink, have raised daughters not to drink and not to associate with people who would rape them if they did drink. And even with the rape these people concede (mentally, few of them dare to say it so publicly as Todd Akin) is "legitimate," they think it can't happen to them. After all, they don't frequent dark alleys, they're careful to park in well-lit areas, don't walk around late at night, especially not alone (they drive, of course!) and at home, they have expensive burglar alarms.

Yes, these are women who cannot relate to a woman who has been raped, because they can't fathom it, they think they can prevent it, and they think everyone else can prevent it. THESE are the women who are voting for fools like Akin.

The funny thing is Ryan has not removed his name as a sponsor of that bill he and Akin co-sponsors. Ryan and Akin are the same.

Sorry! Should have been clearer. Folks had said that the Dems might lose the Senate in this coming election, but if this stuff keeps up, it's looking like the Dems will keep the Senate.

Claire McCaskill's team waged their commercial TV campaign in such a way to point out how extremely "far right" Akin was. They wanted to dangle this red meat in front of the evangelical base (who compose about 40% of the entire state of Missouri). Well, it worked. Akin won the primary. McCaskill figured she'd have a better chance against the loony Akin. Can't wait to see poll numbers after the infamous rape comment.

McCaskill also made a statement directed at rumours the national GOP leadership is thinking of removing Akin and replacing him with a more moderate candidate. If they do this they'll win the chess game.

One poster is upset McCaskill is not attending the Democratic convention. She's avoiding it strategically. She could lose potential votes if she's at the convention--personally I don't have a problem with that. She's a realist (and a damn good senator!).
