I have the 4.5 eternity band and I love it. But I would never trade my engagement ring for it. It is scratched and kind of small and dirty because I never take it off but it's witnessed every day of our marriage. It's an extension of my hand.

+1. It's the story behind the ring, who we were then, how life has changed since then, how he surprised me, how I kept saying oh my gosh so many times and he wryly asked if that meant yes. A trade in/up of that ring ....no way. DH would be hurt. I happen to love my ring but I knew even if DH got me the most butt ugly ring I would have to pretend to love it forever.
I can't comment on the eternity band as an anniversary gift since it isn't on my radar.

I - and I'm assuming others here - just can't get over the gall of people who think that a $20K engagement ring is no big deal. Do you watch the news? Do you have any fucking idea what a flippant bitch you sound like making these comments when the average household income is around $50K/yr and so many people are out of work? Lady, I (and the OP) can do whatever the hell we want with our money - for all you know, the OP has also donated $20K to charity this year. And for your information, since you've chosen to judge me, I'm the person that you quoted, and my engagement ring actually cost less than $2000 and contains no diamonds.

I hate to burst your bubble and I'm no jeweler, but I don't think most jewelers will re-use your old gold, due to porosity issues and varying alloys. There's an online jeweler called Green Karat that will, but in general, I don't think most will.
PP that you quoted here - I've actually had jewelry re-made with old gold before, so I know it is possible, but I think what you said may be true with lower Karats of gold (14K for example because it's not as pure).

My mom lost the diamond out of her engagement ring when I was a teenager and ended up getting a new ring in a completely different style to replace it. I always thought that was weird -- her new ring is much more "her" but it wasn't the ring my dad got her when they got engaged!
