James Holmes has been called quite a few things on DCUM. Trayvon Martin was also called a variety of terms, including "young man":

You are cherry picking two terms out of many to make a point. But, I think you are actually illustrating that a large spectrum of viewpoints are available on DCUM. If that makes DCUM unique (I don't actually think it does), then it is something of which we should all be proud.

That may be true, but the level of sympathy for this person, in the absence of a single statement or real evidence of hardship in his life, is striking. I think that sympathy would largely evaporate if he was a muslim. But much like with the Huguely case, many posters are looking to causes other than "evil". And I think much of the reason is that he looks like one of our kids.

A "troubled" young man? Such an odd choice of words, OP. I would describe a troubled young man as one who has, say, a drinking problem or too many speeding tickets.

Everyone is focused on the "he's crazy" and he will play it that way, but he got all of the chemicals via the university, the university failed him on his exams and, likely, did nothing. They probably didn't even refer him to a counselor or dean. It will be easy for his team to show that he was mentally abused by the university and the breaking point was failing the exams. The university did nothing to help him so he spiraled into madness and went on a shooting spree.

It's not going to be an easy conviction. And I think UofCO needs to be held liable and made example of to other universities that don't give a crap about grad students.

You definitely have a point, however, VA Tech seems to have gotten away with not referring Cho to counseling. How is U of Co different?

That's true, although they lost the civil lawsuit which is what counts. The university is remaining very tight-lipped for a reason. I'm guessing they have culpability and they know it.

I love how the university is going to be blamed, while Smith & Wesson and Remington have no culpability whatsoever. This country is ridiculous.

Thank you!!! A young black kid who happens to be wearing a hoodie in teh "wrong" part of town is a thug who deserved to get killed but a man you hatched a plan to kill as many people as he could is a just a "troubled young man".

Yeah, I think that probably the people who are sympathetic to Trayvon are more likely to be the ones sympathetic to Holmes. I think the ones who called Trayvon a thug are probably the ones who are arguing against gun control in the Holmes' threads.

Wrong. I don't see any correlation. Trayvon didn't kill anyone it was he who was defending himself from a crazy psycho who was following him (and had a gun). For Zimmerman it was basically"I don't like you, You are a thug, you can attack me, I kill you". In the case of Holmes there are more layers. He is mentally ill (I know that there is nothing on this, it is my judgement), He is so delusional that he believed to be someone fictitious and killed people. He probably goes back and forth from reality to fiction and what we saw in the court room is a troubled person. Gun control could have saved not only this but other shooting sprees. The argument that if guns were allowed would have permitted others to defend themselves is incredibly stupid. In the first place you forbid everyone to have a gun so no one has to "defend" themselves. What is the US going to be? like the Far West was in the past? is that how people want to live?
