I say no. Americans have no idea what real poverty is and this is just a case of laziness. Generational belief that the government owes them assistance and so they waste OUR taxpayer dollars on things like iPads and new shoes.

These are bare essential $100, solar power, waterproof laptops. Why not give them this instead of an ipad?
No one "gave" them an iPad.
And the laptops you refer to cost $200.
And a 1st Gen ipad goes for 250.
And you can run thousands of free educational apps on an ipad.

No, it's not.
Do you expect kids to hop on the internet and to suddenly develop excellent research skills? They're looking at crap. What's educational about shoe shopping or watching the latest video on Youtube?
Many underprivileged kids don't have good role models to show them how to research. So the iPad, in that case, is just another toy.
educational programming! LOL! What planet are you from?
Oh great, they are too poor to know how to use it. You are just a treasure. But I bet you won't deny your kids access to the Internet, because they deserve that "crap", right?
I can teach my kids how to use the internet. I use the same methods with my students, but unless these kids are receiving solid instruction in HOW to critically analyze sites (.org, edu, .gov - you get the picture, I hope), they are JUST TOYS! fancy toys
Hop into your ship and fly off to Pluto. You're not welcome here.
Somehow I don't see them using ipads for educational purposes. Just as most people don't just make emergency calls on their cell phones.

And this isn't always people from the projects. They could be unemployed, coddled college grads who chose easy majors flooded with supply and little to no demand.
I feel they are rarer then hens teeth, and they are great anecdotes to rile up people who want to be riled up.
Yup. And further, I DON'T CARE. I DON'T CARE. I DON'T CARE. If they are spending the money on ipads or organic ding dongs, I DON't CARE. Doesn't affect me, I don't have to live their lives, and honestly, it is not like not buying an ipad or a pair of shoes or gourmet coffee is going to magically lift people out of poverty. So, I DON'T CARE.
