Hmm..last year they had > 900 applicants, and there were a lot of disappointed kids, including legacies.

How do I know they're average? In one instance, his parents said St. John's was the only place he was accepted. In another, he's struggled at his mediocre Catholic school.
Not getting accepted at the other school might just mean he was blocked by legacies. Each parish school is only given so may slots per school. At our school the top student went to his second choice because of 4 legacies to his first choice.
Struggles might mean he had a LD and wanted to go to the exceptional Binelde program at St. Johns. This program would allow him/her to take high level honors/AP classes with support. My friends son who did not speak English until he was in 4th grade did well there and as you could imagine needed a little support, but not because he was not smart. He was also accepted at other schools but they would have had to pay for more support.

This forum cracks me up. The thought that all "average" kids congregate in one school is beyond ignorant. 4 "average" girls from my DD's schools got into Visi..average (to use your word) academically, but heavy legacies. There are also many kids at 3-12 schools like Stone Ridge and Holton that got in when they were in elementary school, but are what you would probably consider "average" students. So to say that only "average" kids go to St. John's is, I think, insulting to the kids that go there (and no, I don't have a kid there, but know a number of really nice kids that are current students.) After watching my DD's class go through this highschool selection craziness over the past few months, I find it mildly entertaining. Btw, 5 kids from our school applied to the Scholars Program at St. John's and only 1 got in. These parents that sit on the sidelines and define kids by the schools they go to are just sad.

Visi is very hard to get into if you are from Bethesda because (thank goodness) they don't just want a bunch of Bethesda kids in 1 school.
