I REALLY did not want to know my DCs scores, but I do b/c private school testing. So 3 generations: GF=145; GM=135; both sides similar. Father=138, Aunt= 145, mother= 130. DC (3) = 130, 135, 125. Typical for professionals around here.

I don't know my IQ. My child is smart but not curious and doesn't have the best study habits.

Weirdly, I think, my husband and I are both doctors and our two kids appear to be very average in terms of intelligence. They are only 9 and 11, boy and girl, but neither has been selected for accelerated learning of any kind.

I think what cracks me up about this thread is that everybody knows their IQs as well as their husband's IQs and kid's IQs. Everyone in my family is at least a college graduate, some ivy leaguers, many doctors/lawyers/other DCUM-ish type jobs and I don't think anyone has ever had an IQ test. Where are you all getting IQ tests and why? This is very strange to me.

Many parents know the IQ scores of their preschoolers because the tests kids are required to take to apply to private schools include IQ testing.

Smart enough parents, A/B students, UVA grads, high, but not near perfect, SATs, strong work ethic. Very good speaking and writing skills. Confident, well-rounded people. Really hoping the same for my kids. So far, seem similar, but great variable is my dh and I were not advantaged economically and ours are very advantaged. Will be inTeresting to see how

How is it that so many people seem to now their IQ scores?

I went to Yale for Undergrad, Harvard for grad school, and was a Rhodes scholar in between, and I don't have a clue what my IQ score is. No one told me, I never asked, and I never cared.

And how is it that so many people are convinced that they know how "smart" their child is? Kids change as they mature.

Stop fixating on the poor kids. Just love them and trust that the rest of it will take care of itself.

Hmmm, intrigued by this thread. I grew up blue collar and knew the only way I was going to live a more economically secure life (I won't say better as there is much I miss about my childhood) was to put my nose down and work hard. I attended mediocre schools, so it was not too too hard to be a top student. Did the same in college. Always worked hard at my jobs, even when I wasn't challenged, because my parents raised me with a strong work ethic ("always do your best no matter what you are doing").

One of my DDs works hard at school; the other much less so. Sometimes I fret about the other as the economy contracts and the prospects of a middle class life dim. I have visceral memories of my childhood and know well how the lack of a money creates stress and hardship. Would give many things to spare my children of that situation.

I think that a kid doing well in a disadvantaged environment is smarter than a mediocre student at a prestigious school. It takes so much more effort
