If the smaller dog was unleashed and attacked the bigger one would be protected by stand your ground. If the larger dog came inside of the home the smaller dog would have been protected by the castle law. Is nancy grace going to take this story on?

And, um, have any of you who are attacking the large dog owner every OWNED a large dog? Do you know what happens when you try to stop it from biting something? YOU GET BIT. These are ANIMALs. It is the same idea behind why I can't bring my cat to Petsmart to be groomed. My cat is smart enough to know that it's not a good idea to hang around in a room full of predators. This chihuahua clearly didn't have the same instincts. (Not to mention, the owner knew it would go after the larger dog, so the chihuahua owner is at fault.)

I read the flyer posted in GP and according to the owner of Freckles (the small dog), the owner of the larger dog didn't even react when the large dog was assaulting Freckles. He just let his dog kill Freckles and then he walked away. It's one thing if the dog was off leash shaking a smaller animal, but it wasn't.

The owner behaved badly. That doesn't mean this dog is dangerous.

different PP here. And if you let a small animal/dog loose around my dog he could kill it by accident by just reacting if provoked. I own a 200 pound mastiff. He listens to me but in the time that would take a lethal bite could happen. I can pull him away from dogs that are provoking and have no problem doing so because he is trained. But if the other dog is loose, I cant keep him from aggravating my dog and coming at him. This is where the other dog being leashed as well provides safety for everyone since then their owner pulls him back, I re-direct my mastiff and we are all on our merry little way. I cant tell you how many TINY dogs go after my mastiff btw - it is some sort of Napoleon complex some smaller breeds have. My English mastiff on the other hand doesnt provoke anything ever. He generally looks nervous and bewildered when smaller dogs circle his feet. But if one was really provoking him and off leash anything could happen while I was trying to re direct him....

Also, I think this sounds fishy. I think if the police take a closer look they may find that there was no other dog owner. Yes, I have to say that the dog owner didn't have his dog on a leash. If he did, this would not have happened. Had he put up a fence, this would not have happened. He did not take responsibility for what was a very foreseeable situation. Any large dog could have reacted, and it is not clear that the owner's actions would have done a thing to save the chihuahua.

I agree with what you are saying. However, the fact that the owner of the larger dog did not care that this happened, did not stop... there's really something wrong with that. For him to treat this as a casual thing should be a crime.

I have a puppy that does this and I yank her away from people when she jumps without engaging the person because it just makes her jump more. I'm sorry. My dog is extremely cuddly looking and people sometimes just reach right down and scoop her up into their arms. It's really annoying as it completely breaks her training about not jumping on people. It also makes me look like a mean jerk when I yank her and just say no and turn away. It's a training method, sheeple.

I live in GP and another thing that bugs the living hell out of me is when dog owners let their dog jump up on people (I'm talking about anyone, not just me... seniors, children, whatever) but then just keep walking and don't even apologize or say anything. Not everyone likes dogs; not everyone wants a strange dog to jump up on them or bark at them. I know GP is a very hospitable neighborhood for dog ownership but please be responsible about it. I don't have a dog but my family members do; I like their dogs because I KNOW those dogs. I don't know your dog; I don't know if it's friendly or not. Please be considerate.

I am really, truly, sorry for this poor dog and its owner. But people, KEEP YOUR DOGS ON THEIR LEASHES!! PLEASE! The very next day after this happened, I was walking my not so friendly dog in the neighborhood and a group of 2-3 dogs (off-leash while their owners socialized) ran up to us and started barking at my dog. My dog isn't the most friendly, and becomes hostile when she's on a leash and feels attacked - especially by a dog that's off-leash.

It's really frustrating to me when people let their dogs run loose on the streets.
