I just bought in Manor Woods. Nice houses, affordable for me. The elementary school in the part I bought in (not sure all of Manor Woods is in same elem), Rock Creek Valley, gets great marks on Great Schools. Earle Wood and Rockville seem like good solid schools. I know Rockville isn't considered as good as R. Montgomery, but its still solid.

We live in the Einstein district but our kids are in elemntary school. We bought before they were born and never imagined that we'd stay. But the time goes quickly and the housing market tanked. Now that my kids are both in school it seems much harder to uproot them. So I do wish we'd bought elsewhere. Just another perspective. I imagine we will stay here and hope that the ms and HS improve or are better than people on DCUM think they are.

I agree that being in the best HS district wouldn't be a huge consideration, but I'll admit that it was part of our equation to be in a HS that we would send our kids to based on the info we have at this time. Obviously much could change, including our ability or desire to move in the next 10 years and I wanted to be in a place where we at least would feel like we were able to stay until the kids are gone knowing that private school is not an option.

Also like PPs said, just bc our kids are preschoolers, presumably anyone who looks at our house if and when we do sell might have middle schoolers or even HSers and would care - thus, easier to sell down the road.

This is the OP. I'm not terribly concerned about HS in the immediate, although it does factor into the equation because as another poster pointed out, school quality affects property value. That said, I'm primarily concerned with elementary schools and to a somewhat lesser extent, middle school. My comment about Blair HS which prompted a lot of disagreement was in response to a poster who noted that her neighborhood was close to Blair HS. For me and DH that is not an incentive - at least right now while our daughter is young. At the same time, if we can buy into a neighborhood with a fairly decent HS, all the better. It certainly takes the pressure off to know that the neighborhood school is decent and we wouldn't have to scramble for an alternative like a magnet program or a private school (which financially we couldn't really swing, at this point, anyway).

I don't understand how people with very young children, or no children at all, worry about the character of a HS their (sometimes imaginary) children will enter perhaps 15 years down the road. That school may be completely changed, and the school that everyone touts as family-friendly with a wonderful principal may have gone to the dogs.


Because Einstein and Wheaton have been the worst two high schools in Montgomery County since the 1950s, and because a property's high school assignment affects property value and appreciation potential.

I'm with you PP. When we were looking to buy our current home two years ago, I was pregnant and I insisted on being a school district with the best high schools. My co-worker asked me the same question you asked above and I thought, you know what, that is so true. So, we bought in the Einstein district in an area with a good elementary school and we couldn't be happier with the neighborhood. Our mortgage is really reasonable and I love our house--we were able to afford so much more here than in Bethesda. Will we be here until our kids hit high school? Who knows! I would like to get a bigger house eventually so I'm sure we will move in the next 15 years. Will we stay in this school district? I have no idea but I can tell you that based on what I see at Einstein (and I live a stone's throw away so I see a lot), I would have no problems with my kids going there. And I suspect it will only keep getting better. But if it declines over the next 10 years, we'll figure it out then.

OP, how old are your kids? We are honestly not worried about HS yet because we don't have children yet. We are happy with our ES option, Oakland Terrace, and have been in our house for a year so far. We figure that event if we have a baby next year, that means 13 years to figure out our next move if we aren't ok with MS and HS at that point.

RE: Manor Woods -- Schools are better in Olney/Brookeville (folks from Manor Woods usually end up trading up to Olney/Brookeville).
