If you are not crossing a bridge, then it is not "almost DC"

Literally could not pay me enough to live in Ashburn and have a daily commute to DC.

Its either the big new house in ashburn or the 100 yr old 100 sq ft house in nearby dc falls church, alexandria, or springfield. Make up your mind.

I used to have to go down to the Union area a few times perm month from Ashburn. Even leaving after morning rush it took over an hour driving in. I turned down job in DC that offered a $35k pay raise (over 30%). I figured the cost of the commute (toll road, extra gas and parking or commuter bus) plus the two to three hours per day I’d lose in commuting really didn’t make it worthwhile.

Courthouse -> DC at that time is probably another ~30 minutes.

Reasonable commute from what area? I was also considering a move to Ashburn and commuting in to downtown DC, but would love to hear of areas that lean toward a more "reasonable commute". Thanks in advance.

Now, to play devil's advocate here... my coworker and I, who live near each other in Ashburn but work in Tysons, had to be at a morning meeting in DC. He suggested just carpooling and offered to drive because he said he gets horrible motion sickness when the passenger, which included riding on Metro. Sure, fine, great. I hate driving into DC anyway. Never! Again!

Dude drove like an absolute maniac! Lots of speeding, slamming on his brakes, zipping in-and-out of traffic... he gave me mild carsickness with his driving. We also made it from Ashburn to DC in 37 minutes. THIRTY-SEVEN! I've sat longer in traffice going from the main toll plaza to the Wiehle exit when I used to work in Reston.

I then fully understood how he was able to run so many errands during his 1-hour lunch break & eat lunch not at his desk.

^ you jest but people who live in exurbs tend to reverse-"fish was this big" just how far out they are. I once had some guy in Ashburn tell me it takes him 30 minutes to get into the city. Sure, maybe with a helicopter.
