Love it and I don't get the pronunciation confusion. It's just the word gem with an "a" at the end.

I say, if YOU like the name, go for it. People who liked Gemmas that they have met before will like the name; those who did not will not.

I have known 2 Gemmas in my life, both lovely people.

The first was a super nice Australian girl when I was in elementary school. Everyone liked her and she was genuinely good natured.

The second is my CAS niece who is just adorable.

So, I love the name bc I am very fond of the 2 people I know with the name.

My DD is named Gemma. Her grandfather, bless 'is heart, pronounces it with a hard-G (as in Get), which means that all his relatives and friends also say G-emma. My mother is constantly correcting him, as am I, but we all know he's never going to get it right. Which kind of amuses me.

She's screwed anyway. Her full name is Gemma Clare Funnylongitalianname-Funnyshortname. I'm thinking it's kind of like naming a boy "Sue" -- she'll develop strong character (even if she never learns to spell).

I think British, too, or Australian, and it's pretty.

Instead of mocking or challenging people who honestly say they wouldn't know how to pronounce it, though, I'd thank them and take that into consideration. I named my daughter a very simple name that is pronounced absolutely phonetically-- it's an Indian name and incredibly simple; think "Deepa"-- and people pronounce it wrong. I think they will with any name that isn't either common or fairly traditional. It doesn't bother me; I love my own name even though people often say it wrong, but if it bothers you, it's something to think about.

I don't get the people on this site. They don't like any names. It's either too boring or too odd. What are there like 2 names you can all agree on? But then they become too popular, right? You just can't win.
