in general I agree with you - but where did you get the 94%. I know of a few kids on our block who attend private schools and charter schools.

DCPS had a one time enrollment increase (in the past forty years) last year. What do you know? It was a fluke, generally attributed to the addition of new PS/PK classrooms. But, this year, enrollment fell again. Meanwhile, charter enrollment is now up to >40% of the public school population. That's not surprising, as charters continue their history of outperforming DCPS in the District.

It does seem possible that the JKLM schools would continue to experience over-crowding, but even they are beginning to lose students from their most educated families to the "high-concept" charter schools. That's a good thing though, because it opens up an escape hatch for students from the lousy and not-improving DCPS schools from East of the Park.

Janney parents do NOT want to hear this though. Being underwater by $100K or so is not really a big deal if you weren't planning to move and can afford the payments, but the last thing you want is for there to be even the perception that OOB students might be attending. By the way, "OOB" is widely perceived to be minority, poor, and low-performing, but since no-one is willing to connect those dots that openly, the preferred shorthand is "OOB" and the assumptions are allowed to stand. Bonus: we get to call ourselves "progressive" because we're "supporting" "public education."
