Well, there's a flip side to that - only on DCUM will a priest do something, the church come out and says the priest was wrong, and (numerous) people STILL kick and scream that the priest was right. Dogmatic, myopic thinking is everywhere.

I don't receive communion because it's BS.

She was wrong to ask for communion. He did not follow policy, he was wrong (he was to take her aside and speak to her privately is my understanding. I use birth control, I don't receive communion.

The letter of apology from the priest actually acting like a priest should be all you judgmental people have to read. That's the right way to respond, not pile on more about how she's wrong and the church is right no matter what. That priest recognized they screwed up and apologized in a very compassionate way.

The pious here seem to be okay with the priest's denial of the Eucharist but no one has explained the refusal to officiate at the grave. Why punish the deceased mother and others in mourning because her lesbian daughter was present? Perhaps no one but Catholics "in a state of grace" should attend funerals?? PS I was raised Catholic and although the Church is not a part of my life, this not the Catholic Church that unconditionally supported my separated grandmother on her deathbed.

Putting aside the issue of this woman taking communion for a second would a Catholic not angered by the public way this priest denied this woman communion please explain why he had to leave the alter while she gave a few words in memory of her mother? How is that not just cruel?

And on the issue of communion, I do understand that if she is living with a woman and is sexually active (because that's the sin, right? not just co-habitating with someone of the same sex) that she is living in a state of sin according to the church about which she is probably not repentant (because she's probably comfortable with it and doesn't intend to change it) that she may not be 'fit' to receive communion. But what about all the many many heterosexual couples who are using birth control and who are unrepentant about it and receive communion every week at mass? I mean, really, many many people in this area should not receive communion if these things are disqualifying factors. And even if he had to refuse her communion, the way he dealt with her and her family was cruel. How can the church hope to minister to people making 'bad' choices if priests won't talk with or deal with and literally shun those living the 'wrong' lifestyle? It just makes no sense. If the priest hopes to save people, is this the way to go about it?

Jesus was not cruel and he didn't shun people according to their lifestyle.

Is living a lesbian lifestyle really a 'grave sin?' Kind of cheapens the argument against abortion. Comparing having sex with a woman to what Catholics think is murder?

The priest has no way of knowing WHAT this woman does in her bedroom. So, no, he would not have sinned by giving her communion. Only if she had confessed to him and indicated that she had no intent to change her ways, could he be certain. This was not her home parish, so it is doubtful that he knew anything about her conscience. He assumed, and he publicly shamed her in the most inappropriate of circumstances. It was wrong, stop defending the behavior, you make Catholics look bad.

Because people here are arguing that the priest was within his rights to do what he did, DESPITE the church saying it was wrong. That's partly why people are bitching. Plus, it's fun to make fun of judgmental, sanctimonious jerks.
