Just an FYI. Currently in FCPS Middle schools parents can place their children in all honors classes except for math. With math the student has to meet several criteria for elegibility in Math 7 Honors or Algebra I in 7th grade

Students can be placed in Math 7 Honors by satisfying one of the following three requirements:
• Mathematics 6 Compacted.
• A yearlong accelerated program.
• Successfully completing comprehensive screening to include:
o Teacher recommendation.
o Standardized screening test for mathematics.
o Additional testing information
o Grades in mathematics.
Rising 7th grade students will be placed in Algebra Honors based on all the following:
• Successfully completing Mathematics 6 Compacted or a yearlong accelerated program.
• A score at or above the 91st percentile on the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test.
A score at or above 500 on the Virginia Standards of Learning grade 7 mathematics test.

Just as subjective as the AAP center process in 3rd grade.

Nope -- we had a teacher just like that -- she just could not understand that my kid did not want to read what she felt was "appropriate" and my kid found pointless.

If you are applying for Spring 2013 placement, you would find out in January 2013. If you are applying for Fall 2012 placement, you would find out in April 2012.

Despite our son's high test scores, our DS teacher's "just didn't see it in my DS". The very exerpeinced teacher successfully frustrated my DS that he didn't want to read anymore. Moved to an accelerated program and I have a different, thriving child - that is why it is important to me.

If you are a non-FCPS 2nd Grader (e.g., private school), don't you find out about AAP selection for 3rd Grade in January?

I agree. DD has a 139 composite on CogAT, a 145 NNAT and a 149 WISC and I'm not "99.9% sure" she'll get in.

Kindergarten yes, but by 2nd grade come on. If you're child did well on the tests and is doing great in school, why would you worry so much about getting in? All this speculation is a bit ridiculous sometimes. Same as with making sports teams. Great athletes don't worry about whether they'll make the team when they consistently perform among the best already.

This made me laugh. A parent of a child in my son's KINDERGARTEN class routinely, in conversation with the rest of us parents, talks about how OBVIOUSLY (yes, she uses this exact word) her child will be selected for the AAP program. She brings it up in the context of whether they should move (now) to be closer to the school.

I have a hard time not laughing out right at her, as I try to be more polite. But it is funny. And no, as far as I can tell, her kid is about as "advanced" as the rest of the class.
