OK, wait? How do you make someone eat something? As a kid, I was never forced to eat anything, but probably would have sat at the table all night as the stubborn one I was.

Now that I'm a parent, would LOVE to learn how to "make" my kids more stuff. They only want the blandest foods. Butter is exotic to them.

I don't think I really I developed a palate for different tastes until my 20s, when I had no money and just ate whatever was given to me.

I wonder where my kid's stubbornness comes from?

Yes! The canned Chinese food! Chung King or something, right? I wonder if they still sell that. I don't remember it being that bad though.

That Chun King/La Choy chow mein, served on rice, was really good "Chinese" food when I was growing up. Of course it was topped with those crunchy noodles. Yum!

If you want to be really grossed out, there's a website out there that has pictures of recipe cards from weight watchers from the 70's (I think). They are hilarious and horrifying.

I LOVE that site! Hilarious!

Thank you SO much for this. Literally laughed out loud at the commentary.

pinto beans, cornbread, and milk mixed together in a bowl

LOL - this is an appalachian classic! Seriously - my dad loves this, esp with buttermilk.

Eggplant. We protested about the smell of it cooking, the taste, everything. Then my brother threw up right on his dinner plate. That started a chain reaction of throw up from my sister and me. I still cannot eat eggplant 30 years later.

We had that often when I was a kid and I liked it. My mom served it over rice. It was such a popular dish at one time.

I LOVED chicken a la king. You're right about it once being very popular, back in the 40's when my grandparents got married, that was what was served at their wedding!

My mom used to serve it over these puffed pastry shells. They were frozen and made by Pepperidge Farm--not sure if I've seen them sold any time recently. It was one of my favorites.

My mom was actually a very good cook...but I'd say the worst food she ever made me eat was crab legs. I can't stand seafood at all...and the crab legs were just so slightly sweet and chewy and gross. They wouldn't let me eat the table 'till I ate it all, and of course I threw them up afterwards...I think I was probably around 9 or 10 at the time.

You quoted me on liking chicken a la king. Yes, sometimes we had puff pastry too. Yum!

So funny how as adults our palates change. You mentioned crab legs and a PP mentioned steak as "worst" foods. Surf and turf anyone? I love those things, but didn't as a child.

Steak. I hated it as a kid. It always made me gag because I couldn't chew it. I didn't start enjoying a good thick, juicy, rare steak until I was 22 years old.

My mom was a pretty decent cook, however we did have to eat liver. I once had dinner at a friends house, and her mom ordered Chinese. I was horrified when her mom served us milk (which wasn't very cold) with dinner. I don't think I have ever fully recovered from that expierence.

my mother was very creative in the kitchen. Mostly wins, but I remember the cream of carrot soup... gag. She was in a bad mood that day, and I guess was offended that we didn't like the soup she had worked so hard on... She made us sit at the table for at least an hour, both of us crying quietly because we simply couldn't get it down.
