Actually, in my case the execs are unorganized and aren't great at assigning work. They recognize that I'm smart and can take on more responsibility, yet they're incapable of taking the time to provide instruction.

I do admin work and am GREATLY bored at work. Within a 40 hour work week, I probably do about 10-15 hours of work....it might even be less depending on the week. There's just pretty much NOTHING to do most days. I support others, so my work depends on being given work. My office is "large" in the sense that they hire someone new for any new responsibility/task, etc, so there's very little opportunity to "do more" or "go outside the box". I hate feeling so unproductive at work....Waking up early, dragging my ass in to work, just to surf the internet all day? I could've just stayed home!! Most office jobs seem like they're more interested in having a body in a chair rather than focusing on if their employees are being challenged and given opportunities. My husband comes home telling of his busy day and I'm jealous!!! I really do wish I had more work to do. If we could swing it comfortably, I would quit in a heartbeat.

I have this problem too...and I think it's because I'm off adderall. Not to wish my little baby to grow up, but I'm definitely looking forward to the day I stop breastfeeding so I can start taking it again! My work will suffer until then, I'm sure.

I am amashed why? I complete the entire amount of work I am required to complete at the end of each 40-hour week cycle and have passed every quality exam/review of my work for the last 16 years. There are some people in my position that take much longer to get the same amount I do done. My friend was one of them. I have always been a fast reader/analyzer. I do not feel guilty or immoral. I am not cheating anyone. In fact, I am one of the most celebrated workers in my office.
this is me too. Problem is I have to bill by the hour. So if I bill 5 hours, 3 of those hours may be brain "rest" time, but I honestly justify it because that is how my brain works. I focus insanely intensely for about 35 minutes, then need about 3 hours to decompress, then I do it over again.

NP here. I am also in a rut like this. I decided it is making me kind of depressed' so I am trying to change it. I give myself small blocks of time "off" like 30 minutes browsing on the Internet, 20 minutes to research a vacation spot, or 25 minutes for a walk to get coffee and tell myself that I need to be really working and concentrating for the rest of the day.
Like other PPs, I get pretty good reviews at work. Not off the charts like I did pre-kids, but still quite good.

I don't really think many of the PPs gave the OP advice on how to improve the situation or how to get motivated to work more. Sorry, but I find it pathetic that so many PPs are so proud that they make a great salary to sit around and do nothing. Don't you feel even the slightest bit guilty? Or, do you just feel entitled to such a great salary? 150K to putz around at work? Crazy.

I think this is VERY true.
Or, this is why employers just hire independent contractors to do certain jobs. They don't need to provide benefits and just pay for whatever job needs to be done. It makes sense to me. Why in the world would an employer want to pay someone to surf the net for 5 hours a day? And, as a taxpayer, I certainly don't want to be paying for government workers doing so.

This. I am the PP who posted about being a good fake employee. When I started at my job ten years ago I was so eager and never said "no" to any request to do more work. Over time the next few years I ended up taking on the work of other less efficient co-workers and worked more than 40 hours. I am paid a yearly salary no matter how much I work and there are no bonuses available at the end of the year. I have to be on-site 40 hours no matter when I really finish. I became resentful because I felt I was being punished because my boss I had realized I could do almost twice the work of a co-worker and assigned me more work than others who were getting paid exactly the same. When I came back from maternity leave 4 years ago my boss left and a new one was hired. I decided I would do the same amount as everyone else in my department. One co-worker goes around and has to ask several other people how to do certain tasks and it takes her such a long time to finish anything. When she comes by I make sure to tell her how busy I am because I am no longer willing to do her work. So I don't feel guilty. I'm not the PP, but I have to be at my desk to take calls and in my office if there needs to be an impromptu meeting. When I am at work (3 days a week), I have to be in the office the whole time. I work from home 2 days a week. When I work from home I'm always available via cell, even after I finish my work (which normally I do the day before in the office, anyway). I am usually running errands, doing chores or at the park with my son and can take calls while doing those things.

No. I am not paid by the hour. We do get an EOY bonus if we go over and beyond in production. I meet the highest production award every year.
