No, one mustn't. At least not at my child's elementary school, which is not in the Whitman cluster.

The directive from MCPS to local schools has been to stop tracking and multi-level classes which means that the advanced students do not get supplemental, interesting work but have to do the same worksheets as everyone else.
There are definitely reading groups which have differentiation but the higher levels don't meet very often.

Why aren't they seeking to challenge most of their students? Do the bored students get supplemental, interesting work or just more rote drills/spinning wheels.
Sorry to hear this, it used to be a fine elementary school with tracking and multi-level classes engaging each student.

We love Bannockburn. It's a small, welcoming neighborhood school with involved parents, dedicated teachers, and focused kids (with few exceptions, which is a stark contrast to DC's former school). We don't live in the Bannockburn neighborhood, so can't speak to that directly, but DC's friends and their families seem happy and they are very tight-knit. As a parent, I feel comfortable volunteering in the classroom or at PTA events, but haven't been as involved as I'd like to be. Still I know I'd be welcome. Either Bannockburn or Carderock are excellent options.
