Honey, I WAH full-time making big bucks. I also don't waste time working on my appearance to walk my kindergartener and preschooler into school. I am going to the gym after before I start my work day anyways.
Some of us WAH moms may be the culprits. If I didn't work I'd have a lot more time to worry about what I looked like and be hanging onto my husbands paycheck for fear he'd leave me. Things I don't worry about since I can support myself and kids if need be.

I was at the playground recently and there was a woman there who had clearly spent a long time doing her hair and makeup, but she was wearing ratty old pajama pants and a worn out t-shirt. I thought it was odd you'd take the time to do up your face but not bother to change your clothes.

This is me as well. I won't even check the mail without being dressed, including hair and make-up. I'm from the south as well. Maybe it's a southern thing. During any of my many teenage drama moments, my mother's advise was always "Sweetie, put a little lipstick on. You'll feel better". And you know what? She was right.
So to answer the question, I am a stay-at-home mother. Unless my house was on fire, I wouldn't leave in pajamas with messy hair and no make-up.
One more thing...for all you SAHMs...you do realize that your husband goes to work every day and sees many women who do take the time to get dressed, do their hair, and fix their make-up. Just sayin'. Take some pride in your appearance.

I don't go out in jogging pants unless I go to the gym and wear minimal makeup. My mom when visiting always reprimands me to dress up, take more pride in my appearance. I also wonder why I can't get my DD to wear a dress, all she wants to wear is... jeans and a tee shirt.
I think a lot of people on this thread are channeling lessons learned from their moms growing up. "You should be ashamed of yourself wearing that. Have some standards! A lady doesn't leave the house without her makeup and earrings...." Etc.
If you want your daughter to dress a certain way, that is what you have to hammer in over and over again. "We just don't do that. Jeans are NOT appropriate wear. Have some respect for yourself by dressing appropriately" and so on.
My mom never did that to me so I feel fine wearing schlumpy clothes, personally.
