2) yes, all drop-down cribs illegal to sell or ever give away, not just those that were recalled. This is a fact.

you can't sell it but you can give it away. put it on your neighborhood listserve for free

I don't understand why this is so enraging. Can you not step back and see the bigger picture? I'm glad our govt monitors product safety even if it means some items get trashed from time to time. There is no shortage of cribs (used or otherwise) in the world. I'm glad there are laws that protect lower income people or people who simply don't follow the news as much from other folks' dangerous castoffs. It is better for a baby to sleep in a PNP than a dangerous crib regardless of the brand name. If you want to argue with the statistical threshold for danger that's another thing but you're not making that argument and I find it insane that you insist your crib is safe based on a sample of N=1 ( you) when the cpsc used large sample data to make this decision.

this is such bs, this is just corporations using the goverment to sell new cribs. in all these cases of death, it was usually with the crib not being put together correctly, or in a state of disrepair. Throwing away perfectly good items, thats the american way!

This is what I did with ours. Took off the front panel, used chalkboard paint on the mattress board and it was done. Very easy and very practical.

Try to give it away, word of mouth. I read that guys letter. He discouraged you from giving it away but didn't say you couldn't.

Just wanted to say that I received a drop-side crib from someone a few years ago and my husband went to Home Depot and spent about $5 on a few solid bolts to bolt the drop side to the corner posts. SO much cheaper than buying a brand new crib for our little one. And I was sooooo appreciative of their generosity and hope that someone would rescue it from going to the landfill....

If you have a drop-side crib, it can easily be bolted to make it safe. Use word-of-mouth in your moms groups and also work friends may know someone who would benefit from your generosity. These cribs cost $300+ and are made of beautiful wood, no reason to let them be destroyed if they could bless someone else for the small price of a $5 home depot trip.
