I had the mirena put in this morning. I have never had children, so I was expecting a bit of discomfort. But I was in no way prepared for the pain I endured. The clamping of the cervix was pretty painful. But the insertion was was even worse. It was awful. But the pain left very quickly as she positioned the Mirena and removed the clamp. It was probably the worst 30 seconds I CAN REMEMBER BUT HOPEFULLY IT WAS WORTH IT

I have endometriosis and have had 2 kids. Got it done 6 months PP for birth control and to prevent painful periods. I have a high pain tolerance especially in that area due to years of endo pain. The insertion felt like a huge contraction. It was not a good feeling for 1 minute...I was achy for about 15-30 minutes but then fine by the time I got home. Totally worth 5 years of no more painful periods! I feel like I can live my life and worry about other, more important things like my kids, instead of worrying about if my period is supposed to come this week or next. I think the worst part was the anxiety leading up to it, based on all the comments I saw online from other women!

I just had mine inserted yesterday. I normally have a very high pain tolerance, but that was the most painful procedure I have ever experienced. I'm guessing the reason is because I had a C section and my cervix never dilated. The doctor said I was a challenge and it took longer than expected because of that. I just hope removal isn't that bad.

I've had two vaginal deliveries. Insertion was a breeze -- seriously, less painful than a pap smear. I had a bit of cramping afterward, but nothing major. The annoying thing is the spotting, which I've been experiencing almost constantly since it was inserted, almost three months ago. I've had my period twice, and it lasted for two days each time.

I just got mine inserted 4 days ago and so far so good. The insertion was no problem what so ever. It took my doctor about 2-5 mins to check the cervix and uterus and to get the Mirena in. I was really scared when i read the other posts of the pains that others went through. Since I have never given birth my doctor gave me a pill to insert the night before to help with dilation. After the procedure I had minimal to moderate cramps for the remainder of the evening. Nothing more than a normal period. I had a little bit of spotting that night and the next day perfectly normal. I would say having it inserted was a little bit more uncomfortable than a pap but not extremely painful for me. So far, I'm very pleased tried it out last night and no discomfort or spotting afterwards. I would highly recommend it.

My period did not come on the day I was supposed to have it inserted and I tried to have it put in anyway. Holy cow, that was not happening. Very, very, very painful.

When my period did finally arrive, I went back in and got it done then. it was still painful - the doc said she was worried I was going to kick her- and I yelped. But in the grand scheme of things, no biggie. (I am on meds that don't allow me to take ibuprofen and tylenol did nothing to ease that kind of pain.)

I felt it for a week or two afterward - kind of a twinge-y feeling. But since then, nothing.

Huh. I found the cervical clamping unpleasant but the rest was no big deal at all. Crampy afterwards.

I've had mine a little more than two months. I felt slightly lightheaded after insertion and a little crampy that evening, but that was it. I've had some ongoing spotting, but I asked about that at the 1-month post-insertion check and was told that's very common and that it can last awhile.

Good lord. Mine hurt barely more than a Pap smear. I'm delighted with it.

Had mine today, with goal of helping endometriosis pain and hopefully reducing number of periods because they exacerbate other conitions I have. No prep advice and no meds offered, before or after. I was told to expect a bit of pinching and cramping as he inserted the thing to measure my uterus.

Was horribly painful, enough to make me have a vagal response, with hr in the low 40s, nausea and nearly passing out. And I had two vaginal births.

I took advil after, no help. So I took Tylenol three and a four hour nap, but the painful cramping is still going strong.

I won't do this again. And I'd advise others to go somewhere where they do better prep, including dialation for those who've never delivered or been dialated, local anesthesia, and potentially anti-anxiety meds as well.

I have had to C-sections and found this to be the most painful experience. I even told my doctor I would never do this again. I was in so much pain I started sweating turned white and got very nauseous, they thought I was gonna pass out. I advice you really think out this before you jump right into having it done.

Mine didn't hurt at insertion but at 5 months I got terrible cramps and it worked it's way out! Sooo painful. I later learned that if your body rejects things normally (like earrings) that this could happen...wish I'd known before.

I felt comfortable with my doctor, wasn't anxious and have given birth to two large babies so I thought this would be a breeze. I was wrong! I was in so much pain that the doctor wouldn't let me up for half an hour because he thought I would pass out. I was in bed for three days because I was so heavily medicated that I couldn't function and when I resumed sex with my husband it felt like a hundred scabs being ripped open. I am not a wimp and I didn't expect this to hit me so hard. I will NEVER do this again!!

This sounds horrible. Never getting an iud.
