I will just quickly note that my incredibly pretentious mother named her classic car Hyacinth, and it is an endless source of ruthless behind the back mockery through out our family. I can assure you that anyone between 15 and 85 who has been exposed to PBS is aware of Keeping up Appearances.

Granted, a television show really should not sway your decision at all if you love it. It just seems that people react to a perceived pretentiousness here...it could be hard to pull off if you are not British.

Rose and Lily are lovely names in our immediate family that we've considered for our daughter, but beware they are getting extremely popular right now. We are passing because of it.

Laurel is SUCH a lovely name! Kudos!

Perhaps Iris?

I think of The Pioneer Woman's best friend, who is named Hyacinth: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pioneerwoman/333322019/

Just for the floral record - I have a daughter named Laurel. I highly recommend it as a floral name. I am now in search of another floral name for my second and I am having a tough time. I can't use Rose or Lily because of people that are way too close to us to copy their names.

Hyacinth is one that I have decided against because I don't particularly like how it sounds.

Why not name your kid Blossom?

That is a horrible name OP. Why would you do that to your child?

Me too. But doubt that most people have that association.

me too! i only know because my 85-yr old GRANDMOTHER watches this show. so to me it's british and snooty and old-lady and NOT cute old-lady. that character on the show ruined that name for me. terrible name.

It's not. It's Bucket. She just pronounces it like bouquet in order to sound more French/sophisticated.

To the OP - like many others, that show was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw your post.

Duh - it was a JOKE...She says that all the time on the show.

Lol, whatever, Foxglove.

Anyone who thinks Foxglove is on par with Hyacinth as a name really *does* need to get out more, lol.

It still runs on PBS all the time.

It sounds very flower child to me. Have you thought of Dahlia? For some reason, that sounds more like (human) name to me.

It makes me think you read the Julia Quinn romance novels. Great series of books for all of you who apparently prefer outdated television shows, but I certainly wouldn't name a child Hyacinth.
