In CA they are bonded, have insurance, etc., so you don't have liability if anyone gets hurt. Better than Home Depot, where you open yourself up to issues if something unfortunate happens.

Chances are high that whoever legit contractor you hire for kitchen/bathroom will stop by home depot/7-11 to pick up a couple of day laborers to help him out for the day/week before heading over to your house to work on your project.
