People who prep for the wisc are wasting their time. The testers will ask about prep and anything your child says about these thing will go into the final report.

It is depressing that people aren't just happy with the children they have versus the children they want.

As someone said before I do not believe this threads purpose is to discuss if the testing is valid but to give support and answers to those of us who are having to take wthe WISC on appeal. I know there are several who are taking the WISC because of a low GBRS, but there are also those who are taking it because of low CoGat scores. Whatever the reason all these parents are hoping for the best for their child and it is a very stressful time.

Just curious is your dd accepted into the AAP or are you using the WISC to appeal as well?

21:33 coached, to try to get an advantage. we do not know if it works. My dd was not coached. lets say that coaching works to 20 points, which might be reasonable given what I heard. My dd's scores where 120....yours where say 136. How do we know that your DC did better than mine from an intelligence perspective. We can not.

So now the committee evaluates our children. My DD's GBRS is 15 with scores around 120. Yours is (hypothetically) 10 with scores of 140. They do not know who boosted. But,, they are aware of the issues of test prep. Tough choice. We talk about the subjective nature of GBRS...nut not of the tests. What if this type of test, given to 2nd graders has a high variance because of prep, kids modes, add issues, etc? They are a single measure at a single point in time. GBRS are based on 1.5 years of classroom observation.

Now, WISC is more reliable that CogAT, but still suffers from variance. Back when I was in grad school, I took part in a study (as a subject) to find out the day to day variation for the test scores..Then did a WISC, and over a period of 2 weeks, I took other tests on a daily measure. What they found was that the 'scores' could vary by as much as 30 points day to day, and it appeared to to real variation in IQ. On a good day, 160, bad day 130.

So I am skeptical of the mass given prepable test scores.

WISC is much more reliable than CogAT, NNAT or GBRS. I think 132 and above on WISC PRI, VCI or FSIQ is more realistic (or maybe 130 should be sufficient). No way they are going to set the hurdle at mid to high 140's. 145 would be 99.9%, they are not picking 1 kid out of 1000.

140's would place in the 99th percentile I believe. That is quite a hurdle to overcome a subjective GBRS score for entry into a group that comprises the top 11% of the field. I do agree with your statement that no on really knows. That is the problem with the whole system. It is a black box.

On an appeal how much weight is placed on the WISC and what do you think would be a good score to equal out a low GBRS?

I coached my DS. He did great. No way of knowing how he would have done without coaching, but at least I know I did everything possible to give him the best chance.

I do not think too many people are paying for test services to improve scores on the CogAt and NNAT. And even if some did, what source says it improves scores 15 to 30 points? We have no way of knowing unless this child did a test, then was coached, and then did another test.

I think it's ridiculous to think kids with high test scores were coached. Does anyone on here know of any child who was coached? And as someone mentioned, the WISC score would tell a pretty true story of the kid's abilities.

Yes you can get test preparation books for the CoGat and NNAT but I do not believe there is anything out there for the WISC.I saw a whole discussion about the pros and cons of prepping your child on another index.

What is the proof behind that statement. All reports have heard from Fairfax County say you cannot prepare for the tests and that a "good nights sleep and a good breakfast" are the best preparation.

I have never seen high Wisc scores rejected...Wisc of 114' maybe, Wisc of 130 is better than 130 gogat
