I wouldn't use Miralax either: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/06/science/scrutiny-for-a-childhood-remedy.html

Or just google Miralax side effects children. It's scary that doctors still recommend this.

There are many safer alternatives. Try a magnesium-based product like Poop Doc. It works just as well. Even better, find a doctor (it can be tough- most GIs just seem to like easy fixes) or a nutritionist who will work with you to figure out what is causing the constipation in the first place. The most common causes are gluten and/or dairy or casein intolerances.

And as background, yes, we had a child that had acute constiphttps://media.chop.edu/data/files/pdfs/polyethyline-laxatives-fact-sheet.pdfation for years, so I know how bad it can be. Miralax will only mask the problem- it won't solve it.

The CHOP study is to address rumors and scuttlebutt on the internet that gets passed around without question. However, it gets cited as if the opposite were true -- that CHOP and/or the FDA was concerned that there were serious issues with the product. This is actually more like the plethora of studies following the Wakefield anti-MMR business which demonstrated that there was no connection.

My daughter has acute constipation so bad that she bleeds into her stool. So, you know better than her doctor?

We went through the withholding stage with DD#2. It was horrible, so we have BTDT. The top poster makes a good point about the aluminum. Many doctor's don't give much thought to natural approaches to reverse constipation. Even after the withholding stage had passed, she was still constipated. I discovered that my DD is gluten sensitive and once GF her constipation disappeared. Adults and children should not needs "medical aids" to move their bowels. If you do, then something is off in your diet. Not enough water, not enough fruit or fiber or a food sensitivity. Gluten, grains, corn, soy or GMOs can all cause problems for sensitive people. Our family does not have a history of food allergies or sensitivities, but I now see first hand how this can play out and affect one's overall health.

Perhaps a registered dietician would be more helpful than a doctor. BTW - dieticians have an extensive science background, so they better understand how food affects health.

PPs, I'm not clear why you think there is aluminum in Miralax? The chemical structure of Miralax/PEG3350 is H?(O?CH2?CH2)n?OH. Aluminum -- with chemical abbreviation Al -- is not present.

Did you have a citation for that?

Yes, our ped gastro said the same - do not mix miralax with a dairy drink - it decreases the effectiveness.

Interesting. We put it in milk because that's the only way DD consistently drinks it, but it is extremely effective (in fact she is pooping too frequently and now we're reducing the dose and hoping to phase it out). She also acquired a taste for prunes, and plum organics 'healthy tummy' pouches, which we hope will do the trick naturally so we can stop using miralax. We've only been using it for about a month.

I agree with this. It is frustrating that most doctors we have seen (and we have seen a lot) have no interest in finding the root of the problem. I wouldn't want my child taking Miralax for years, hoping that the situation will eventually resolve.

I was told that it has to be in a clear liquid to work effectively. We usually use apple juice.

+1

Really hard to completely dissolve in milk. Dissolves easily and quickly in water. Add to cup, pour water on top, stir, and let rest for one or two minutes.

I know you said she doesn't like juice but orange just was the best for me. Also you could try a fruit smoothie or applesauce. My mom also use to put ice cream and miralax in a blender and mix it ip and put it back into my bowl. I couldn't even taste it
