There are many family secrets. I won't reveal all of them here since it's not really anonymous.

My grandmother was murdered at a crime scene. I was always told she had died in a fire. Dad was 5 at the time, with twin brothers aged 2. My Dad's father was framed for the murder, put in jail, then finally released...he didn't do it. There were anti-semitic overtones to it (my family is Jewish, and they were living in a very small town in Ohio at the time.)

The PP is 1/16 black. It's very doubtful that s/he looks black.

I don't look black, and neither did my Grandfather. I only questioned as to whether he might have an Italian heritage when I learned the "secret". It's not like I'm going to start claiming to be black or anything but I don't see it as something to keep hidden either, it's just interesting.

It was probably kept hidden to hide having black blood in the family but really the secret should be that the baby was probably the product of rape.

My father was an abusive alcoholic. My mother would never discuss it, even after he died. He died 20 years ago, and my brother still won't have a conversation about it. Not sure how secret it really was though, because my mother was always walking around with a black eye. For all I know everyone was talking about it but us.

It's remarkable how so many of us have so many secrets. Even when someone tries to mock the other's secret--they reveal their own pain. The pain of not belonging, somehow.

The only ones that knew the secret before her were her mom and 'dad'. She and her mom are super close still. She no longer has much to do with who she thought was her father. (He and my sister had split up when she was a preschooler but he was very involved in her life until she was in high school and he remarried.) None of us talk about it at all. The identity of her real father is still a secret, although my parents are pretty sure they've figured it out. We're from a small town and there's a guy that looks just like her who always asks them about her. As far as I know, she has never asked about him.

My mom supported the family (fortunately had a PhD and had a good job). My dad didn't do a damn thing all day long, but on our school forms, my parents would write "independent scholar". My mom would act like he was this wonderful person and my dad practically had this cult following among people to whom she had painted a rosy picture. He also sexually abused me which my mom will to this day (well after his death) refuses to admit. I am getting great pleasure out of writing all this here - thanks OP.

OP, why do you want to know? You must have something pretty unsettling to tell us, besides what you posted, if you are asking. It is anonymous, so you can tell us. Have you resolved whatever it is?

My confession was more timid I guess, because I started this. I have always dated Jewish men and marrried a Jewish guy. I guess it is just amazing to me looking back what a tense issue merely appearing Jewish was. It is very sad, I agree. Thank goodness times have changed. But this stuff was really, really intense 2 or three generations ago.
