Post 04/23/2012 17:01     Subject: Why would anyone send their child to GWU?

This is a truly pathetic post. Is this what bored and useless trophy wives talk about these days? Did any of you (soccer moms) go to "top" colleges or even finish secondary school (non-GED route)? Would any of you even have money to send your children to college aside from your husbands?

GW is a fine school, not elite, but not a poor choice. As a Georgetown alum I can awaken all of you to the fact that Georgetown is a relatively poor school with many sub par facilities. Sure G-Town has general lay prestige and yes it is an elite institution, but is it truly on par with the likes of HYPSM? Not at all. I agree with the posters who understand that outside of HYPSM/Oxbridge, there really is little difference in school prestige generally speaking.

This thread is dumb.

I went to GWU. Can't be beat for anyone interested in politics/government. No university is more well connected. I had fantastic internships and jobs. And got about 25k a year in aid from the university, combined with other financial aid that allowed me to attend with zero parental contribution. I borrowed 40k over the course of 4 years, which I am okay with. I would have had to borrow 10k a year to attend UNC chapel hill as an instate student, as they offered me zero aid.

GW has great supports, I've heard, for students with disabilities.

Do you have to live on campus? Or can local students live with their parents
I know many say living on campus is the way to go. But you do save a lot if you do not have to

I guess it depends. I wouldn't be thrilled about the fact that it is so insanely expensive and not top of the top tier. But if DS were interested in a field (like politics) that was very DC-centric, I would probably be ok with it because of the internship opportunities.

Geesh folks. College kids are NOT "children".
So nice when a child can "select" where their parents will spend 200k on them and its not even ivy league. It's kind of gross.
If my children choose schools whose value I can't appreciate, I'll pay what I'd have paid for them to go to a 'reasonable' school...They'll have to take loans for the rest...

And if they don't get a job or mate that I approve, I will fill their stocking with coal.

I am so glad my parents contributed a grand total of $500 to my college education. Last thing I wanted was an education with strings attached.

For what it's worth, GWU has a top 50 U.S. News & World Report ranking.

Weird -- that's my EXACT prediction. I was just talking about this with my friend over lunch today. I don't think the GW model of higher education is sustainable. When the student loan bubble goes down, there will be the uber-elite schools + state schools + community colleges.

They are too expensive and not prestigeous enough. Its going to be Ivy League, Hopkins, Stanford, Duke, Northwestern, U of Chicago + State Research schools (UMD, Penn State, Michigan etc..) Community colleges and on-line schools. The Kenyons, Miami, G W's, of the world are going to be F'd.

"Gdub" as it is called is for rich Jewish kids who can't get into NYU or Penn.

University of Miami in FL.

I have heard from a GW grad that there are a lot of Jewish kids there, so if someone were looking for a "Jewish College" it would possibly fit the bill.

Agree with your general premise pp. Miami of Ohio is public by the way.

If your kid goes to School without Walls, they could earn up to two years of college credit for free plus they're doing college work in HS.

I agree pp. I agreed to pay for only a top five college. Otherwise, I told my kid she'd have to go to a state school -- I did and it was great.
