Is it better to get pass grade rather than C-. Don’t know if it’s possible to replace C- with Pass Grade

You child needs to aim lower than T50.

Class rank at the beginning of senior year (or other signal like Cum laude recognition if the school doesn’t rank) means more than GPA. Your kid will first be assessed in comparison to his classmates- not just grades but for everything else as well. Your kid could have better grades than a classmate but the classmate could bring something else to the table.

My dc's friend from NYC TT private got into UChicago with a C on his transcript and bare minimum classes so definitely consider ED1 there. His overall GPA was 3.6. ED1 Emory is also a good option since they dont consider freshman year as much. CMU ED (not to SCS) is another option.

My kid got into VT (not business or engineering) with two C- sophomore year (not in subjects related to their major). My kid had an injury that year, missed a lot of classes and had trouble concentrating. This was explained in “extra info” portion of common app. I want to assume their HS counselor explained this as well in his rec letter. Junior year got two 5s and a 4 on AP exams, plus had another 5 from soph year. Grades improved and was able to graduate with a 4.04. Not sure if VT considers AP scores. Others do.

This is incorrect for Uchicago.
