Canvas is down everywhere. And it isn't the end of the world. And I say this as someone giving an exam tomorrow that requires the students to long onto Canvas and take a timed quiz. If we can't do it, we'll figure out what to do. We all managed to learn things before Canvas came along, and we'll continue to do so tomorrow.

But how???

How exactly are you going to post assignments, provide grades & feedback and communicate with your students?

+100

I think a lot of people on this board have no experience with the systems that get talked about (see yesterday's thread about Slate) and instead of thinking and reading, they just unleash misplaced anxieties.

Calm down, Betty. No one is comparing this to war.

Jesus.

Nothing wrong with old school paper and pencil blue book exams.

All the study materials and old assignments are on Canvas. It’s not just the platform to take the final. It’s the entire work history for the class.

Money of course. The hackers don't care about some random college kid's grades. They want the university or Canvas to pay a ransom.

It’s back up now, but a days long outage would have posed a big problem with ending the semester. Postponing final exams would have led to some students having conflicts with the new date, which would have created logistical headaches. Professors can of course email out learning materials. The problem is the finalizing of course grades, especially for graduating seniors.

Thanks for the heads up! Fellow professor here. Procrastinating on DCUM pays off. Just exported the grade books from all my courses on case things go haywire again. Not done grading final papers, but at least I’ll have a record of what was graded to date. This situation is a good reminder to export the grades periodically, especially if Canvas is going to be this vulnerable.
