Holy cow. You people eat all day every day? Only pigs can eat like that.

$400 a week for four people is a reasonable budget. That's $100 per person for the week. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks.

I remember when I was in graduate school I could feed myself on $50 a week, and that was 25 years ago! At the time my mother was shocked I could do it so cheaply.

You missed the "two teens" part.

Beans - dried in a bag; soak overnight before using
Rice - also dry; boil as needed; rice cooker helps
Potatoes - dry in a bag; easy to microwave

Seasonal fresh vegetables or canned vegis

Meat only in a family pack - usually $2.99/lb
for chicken in the family pack.

Bread - generic and from the bread shelf, not from the bakery section

Spices from CostCo in the jumbo packages

The bread from the bread section is not bread. It’s something else cosplaying a bread.

Agree. I only eat bread that I bake. I bake a loaf of whole wheat and barley bread 2-3 times a week. Plus I make our own Brioche hamburger buns too, and English muffins.

We make our own bread too. It's light years better than grocery store bread. I'll buy French baguettes at Costco, break them down into sections and freeze. I pull out sections as needed and defrost.

tonight 2 people ate for about $5-6.

bagged caesar salad - 3.66
leftover meat from the weekend - 2 chicken tenders and 5 shrimp - $2-3.

i buy meat on sale always. to me that is the big money eater.

we never buy bottled water.

your list doesn't really have much to make a meal on it.

I spent $93 at Aldi the other day and got:

3 bags of apples
Grapes
Mandarins
2 packs tofu
Cheddar popcorn (for school lunch snacks)
Cilantro
2 pack scallion
Cabbage
Bag carrots
2 big clamshells spring mix (I don't want lettuce)
3 bell peppers
Zucchini
Buffalo sauce
Pickled jalapeños
Large flour tortillas
2 bags freeze dried strawberries (not cheap but a nice treat)
Cheese: mozzarella, cheddar, and cheddar jack
Jarred garlic (yeah, I have fresh but it's nice to have in a rush)
Can of beans
2 lb pasta
1 box chickpea pasta
Milk
Chicken nuggets

Also got a few other things at Costco (strawberries, bananas since Aldi was out, chicken, baguette, olive oil, pesto), so total spend for the week was $155. But it will get a family of four through a week.

NP. Lots of people. I have 2 fridges and neither one has a water dispenser. I have a Brita pitcher.

What’s the problem with your tap water?

Basically everyone’s tap water contains estrogen from BCP unless you’re getting it from a well. A simple charcoal filter can remove most of it.

Wtf?!

I bought ingredients today, for five nights of dinners for four, for $80. Are you exclusively shopping at Whole Foods or what?

You are shopping stupid.

-Buy dried beans and rice. Canned beans are fine and cheap too. But you should absolutely never buy packages of cooked lentils. Dried lentils are so cheap and are quick to cook (no presoak)

-no bottled water

-buy bulbs of garlic. They are very cheap. Peel and chop yourself

-buy cheaper meat and eat meat less frequently. Chicken thighs are cheap and so much better tasting than breasts.

-buy seasonal vegetables that are on sale. Of course fresh artichokes are going to be expensive. Or buy frozen for soups and stews

-same with fruits.

So get a reverse osmosis system. You can get one just for drinking water at your kitchen sink
