Doesn't happen today in the US. But I totally remember it from the 80s. So fun. Random cousins and family friends!

A friend's daughter was going to France for a week for spring break and when I asked what she'd be doing she said she'd probably just go to school with her cousins. So it still happens somewhere in the world!

This happens in the book, Double Fudge, by Judy Blume

Yes, I did this visiting an extended family member in Nevada one year. She was a year behind me in school. She was 7th grade, I was 8th.

I called to see if the visiting friend could go to school for the day, and they treated me like a crazy person. It's too bad- those visits were fun!

As they should. Teachers are not babysitters for random kids on vacation.

Where did you grow up? I've never heard of this in the 80s and 90s.

When I was in 3rd grade there was a girl who came to our class maybe once or twice a month. Her parents were divorced and she mostly lived with her mom but her dad got long weekends twice a month and she would go to our school those days. This was in Ky in the 80s.

Never happened.

Sounds possible. In my MCPS 90s high school, this one girl brought her newborn baby for the day

My grandmother was a gym teacher at a public, rural early elementary. Every teacher with kids or grandkids on another calendar brought them to school. The rules were simple: kids couldn't disrupt the class, had to be occupied and couldn't be in a classroom with older kids. Teachers were happy to have middle/high school kids come help with giving tests kids missed, upper elementary would read quietly in the corner until recess, and on grade level just participated in class. Teachers normally didn't keep their kids in their own class, that way they wouldn't distract mom.

When we were 2-5, we had pictures done during the school's picture day, just didn't get grouped into a class. It was cheap, photographer didn't care, school was fine with it. We just weren't allowed to stay all day until 4-5 with the young 5s teacher.

I remember this too. One boy in 6th grade was really bad and his father came in and spent the day with him and told the teacher to call him if he ever made trouble again. He had a cowboy hat and a GUN IN A HOLSTER!!! This was 1997 in Michigan.
