And, to them, it is settling. Their aim is a T15, Ivy or Ivy+. They aren't hoping and praying that UVA comes through. This is especially true for the super stats/EC kids who see UVA more as a safety than a reach or even a target.

Yes! One of my kids said UVA was the boring choice and the other didn’t want to run into high school classmates.

And before you accuse me of fussing dear old UVA you should know we’re a double Hoo family and the kids grew up wearing the gear and going to the football games.

That’s a weird way of thinking. Lots of kids apply to lots of schools that they don’t necessarily want to go to. And they get into some and not others.

Uh huh. Sure.

You sound like you haven’t gone through this yet. You’ll see.

Yes, I have. And more than once. My kids applied to plenty of schools that they knew they’d get into and did but never really would have wanted to go to—but not to any that they didn’t think they’d get into but didn’t want to go to anyway. Because that’s really weird and a waste of time.

Thanks for making the universal assertion that anyone applying to UVA as an afterthought isn't going to get into the school. That's highly data-driven of you! Kids apply to schools they don't really want to go to ... as you just noted that your kids did.

And especially a school like UVa. I think my kid felt like he should apply. So many do. And it’s hard to ignore the quality for the value. So it’s kind of a default and even more so without any extra effort now. I don’t get the poster who keeps saying ppl are defensive. Not sure what their deal is. Troll? We had our eyes open knowing he very well may not get in. This isn’t our first rodeo. Have seen lots of high stats kids not get in to UVA even as they got admitted to higher ranked privates.

Lots get into UVA and do not pick it.
Lots do not apply in the first place because it is not a fit, and they get into ivies, Williams, Amherst and have William and Mary as their in state backup, not UVA. UVA is a wonderful school but not a fit for many, nothing to do with whether they could be admitted or not.
People get into T10/ivy and do not pick them. Or do not apply to some or all because they do the research and know some or all will not fit.

UVA has a yield rate of about 40%
Most accepted students do not choose to attend.

Yield Rates:

Emory, 37%
UNC Chapel Hill, 40%
USC, 40%
UVA, 40%
Rice, 42%
UC Berkeley, 45%
UMichigan, 45%
Georgetown, 46%
UCLA, 47%
Pomona, 47%

Most accepted students do not choose to attend any of the schools listed above.

Partly because they would rather go to Cornell 64%.

Anything 40% or higher for a Public is actually outstanding. Especially for those schools that don't yield protect utilizing Early Decision method.

No. All students who are part of the yield equation were admitted.

(number of admitted students who enroll) / (total number who were admitted) = (yield rate)

Uh huh. Sure.

Kids are applying to anywhere between 12 and 20 schools. They're applying to reach schools, target schools, and safety schools. You'd be a buffoon to think that they aren't applying to schools they have no intention of going to, even if it is UVA. A kid that's applying to every single HYPSM or a ultra high stats/high EC value kid is certainly NOT aiming for UVA.

Nope. You don’t sound defensive at all.

Well you're sounding like an idiot! So to each his own.

Now you reaaallly don’t sound defensive. Why are you so triggered?

DP. It’s really weird how invested you are in trying to get random people to admit their kids can’t get into UVA. (And my kid got into UVA, so don’t call me defensive or triggered.)

Yield rate OOS is <20%. Bet we see that drop further

UVA OOS yield is 24%
In-state yield is 62%
