Subject: Do you like your siblings?
My sister is my best friend without question. We live on opposite sides of the country and talk daily, sometimes multiple times.
My brother is a certified a$$hole and I stopped speaking to him 9 years ago. When my mom passes away, I will literally lose track of him entirely. Her need to speak of him is the only reason I know anything about his life at all.

I love my brother - love spending time with him, but he lives in another country so I only see him once a year. We text pretty regularly though.
It’s interesting bc the other day my 13 y o DS said he doesn’t know how people get through life without siblings- he’s really grateful and derives happiness from the sibling relationship, but you never know how things will be when they are older. I hope they stay close. I say this coming from two dysfunctional extended families - dysfunctional in very different ways.

I have 4 siblings. I love all of them and get along well with all of them. There is one I only love because they are my mother's child. So the love I have for that one is derivative love from my mother. Otherwise, no way somebody like them would be in my path.

B#1 typical narcissist oldest son entitled boomer … he knows it though so he’s tolerable. His wife is amazing
b#2: alcoholic… actually loved this one at a times so kind and charming. Abused by a priest Died of alcoholism.
B3: probably Asperger’s … neither live or hate him he dies the right things, love his kids though.
B4: black sheep … he’s a good guy but is too guarded and now selfish to love.
B5: alcoholic. Was my best friend until a priest abused him.its a tragic lose to the world he’s a genius but cant love anyone including himself.

I love my siblings and have so much respect for them. I wish I saw them more. We all have very different personalities and lifestyles but I feel like we will always show up for one another. We make a great team when it comes to caring for our dad too. I’m extremely lucky!

My siblings are actually not my siblings, but I grew up not thinking that way. . We were all adopted. One had major behavioral issues from day one that impacted their life and all of our lives as well. She has self exiled from everyone. Long history of criminal behavior, unethical behavior. My other sibling grew up in the shadow of that sibling and probably got very little attention as a result. Now a huge MAGA fan, living a MAGA life, has little empathy for anyone. Her kids have mental illnesses, depression, etc. They are adults now.
I gave myself the grace to walk away when I was in my
fifties. So, no, we have no relationship. Our parents are gone. I did try for many years.

I don’t know why but it has always felt competitive with my sister. I don’t know if it’s just temperaments or something my parents did or what. I’m older and I just always felt like she was trying to one up me and do things better/sooner. My mom (who has since passed away from cancer) always favored her but tried to frame it not as favoritism but as my sister “needing” her more because I was more capable.
So it’s complicated and I don’t know how I’d feel about my sibling if the family dynamics could be removed which they obviously cannot. It doesn’t help that sister moved a few states away and voted Republican, as does her DH.

My brother? Yes! My sister? No way. I don't love her now. While she treated me far worse than anyone else from birth onward, she has done so many disturbing and corrupt things over the years I would never be friends with someone like that ever. She's a whirl of chaos who takes advantage of people and considers herself superior to all.
