No need.
The yield rates at these merit schools tell you a vast majority of merit admits go somewhere else. More likely than not, they got admitted into a higher up.

They are all the same kid.

Top 40 with merit.
Rejected at T20 -- cs/math major.
Any luck with T20-30?
Waitlisted at UMich. They asked if DC was still interested but DC decided to just stay in state at UMD with merit, which is T20ish for CS. In the end, it worked out well. DC is very happy there, and it saved us a ton of money.
DC had really high stats: 1580 SAT, 4.0/4.92 wgpa from a magnet program.
oh man, this even isn't enough for any one of T20 CS/Math?
It’s not just about the top stats.
In RD they’re just so few CS slots left. You need to fill another institutional priority to make your application desirable.

Don't think it's because few CS slots left. It's just an oversubscribed major and the competition is high with tons of applicants.
What’s the real difference between that? Oversubscribed = limited slots as the process goes on? Or is it something else?
Just watched the YouTube episode in the other thread, called Hooks, and it was interesting. How he honed in on the one narrow area of engineering where they might need more students in RD. They got that in the weeds.

Thanks - this is my child this year - similar academics and major interest, W&M with merit, and three of the same reach schools. It will be an interesting month.

For people who’ve been through this, does getting merit in that range usually mean you’ve got a real shot higher up (T15-T30?) too, or is it not that predictive? Just curious what others have seen from actual results. Didn't apply to USC EA.
Not necessarily. One of mine received admission at one T10 and merit scholarship at a T20 but was shunned by other T10s and two T20.
