They're usually not random people, rather someone affiliated with the university.

I could see there being useful info for parents of incoming freshmen about how move-in works, or recommendations of places to stay for parents weekend, etc.

Anonymous wrote:I joined. They did not require a copy of letter. It is not used much. But, I was glad I joined when there was a lockdown and the only info came through that page. Turned out to be a false alarm.
