Because of its proximity to the auto industry, Michigan engineering has a very storied program. It has been one of the top programs for decades — and had the receipts to show it.

Rankings can be manipulated (Norrheastern, WashU and Rice are good examples).

Both are top 5 Engineering Schools. GT at 3 Umich at 5. So it's a pick'm. It really comes down to what your kid wants in environment etc. Tour both. That's what we did ended up at Georgia Tech and kid loves it there. Kid would have loved both I believe. Congrats on your choices.

Many would Michigan over GT for engineering. The whole premise of this thread is silly.

They receive about 56,000 OOS and international applications a cycle. Unfortunately they reject all but about 8 or 9%. Must serve the State of Georgia first which sucks for us OOS’rs that want to want attend one of the top engineering schools in the country at a relatively reasonable price. Both engineering schools are great undergrad options. GT has more research $ coming in. GT has a surprisingly nice contiguous campus in the middle of a big city. UM is two campuses in a college town. Since UM has broader academic options the feel is different there.

Good proportion of graduates get first jobs within a state or two so if you like Midwest or Southeast that might come into play.

GT is 61% in-state.

BS we've spent a lot of time there recently. Our kid is at GT now as a freshman and loves the campus and Tech Square is awesome. Beautiful nature spaces all over campus. Other than the East and Tech Square where all the restaurants and activity are (which is fun and safe) most of the campus you don't even realize you are in the city. He absolutely loves Atlanta. Chose it over Northwestern and UT Austin. All three great urban vibe schools and awesome campuses with the benefit of being close to major urban hub for internships and Co-oops. The weather is much better in Georgia as well. He had no interest in Michigan as he wanted to get away from the Midwest where we are from and loves the Southeast. Needed a change. Also, GT Engineering is also just plain phenomenal. Good luck with your decision.
