Usually, the athletes who are far from the ceremony don't get to participate at all. This is better than that!


Yes but usually it's only a handful of events and athletes who are too far away. This year a lot of the big ticket events are way up in the mountains very far from Milan and also scheduled early in the games. So it's way, way more athletes (including many of the most recognizable athletes in premier events) who are not actually at the stadium. They did this to avoid the opening ceremonies looking quite so empty, and also to ensure that some of the more famous athletes at the games actually appeared at the ceremonies.


Although this is not atypical of winter olympics. Torino, Vancouver, Calgary and others had events in pretty spread out places. SLC was good because the skiing is so close to the city but they still had a medal area in Park City in addition to downtown SLC.

Yes, where their village/event is. Example, skiers are in Cortina, not Milan.

It is by necessity. There are already events going on (curling, hockey, skiing and snowboarding qualifiers, etc.). So the athletes in Cortina or Bormio or wherever aren't going to make it to Milan.

It's not as grande and dramatic as Paris though, at least not yet. All the performances along the Seine, and Celine Dion singing from the Eiffel Tower, Nadal and Serena riding up the Seine on a boat to deliver the Olympic flame. It was iconic.

This is cool though. I always love the parade of nations during the Winter Olympics because I think they do more fun things with the outfits.


Yes, a mix of gorgeous and juvenile oddities. Kind of goes with the theme.

Sounds like a logistical situation given the mountain events in Cortina and the others in Milan. Shawn White said it’s nice; this way the mountain-based athletes do get to participate.
