Depends what the "mess up" is. But generally, they can (mostly) only help your DD's chances as long as she isn't a droid.

Harvard tries to interview as many as possible. In most cases, interviews do matter.

In most cases interviews don't matter.
They may be a gut check to make sure that the student lines up with the resume but I don't think an interview can get you in if the committee wasn't already inclined to admit you.
