We have about 150k for our pre-k kid. We don’t currently plan to contribute more.

+100 We have 4 kids (2 in college already) and all our money is in stocks and investment accounts. Most wealthy people don’t use 529s.

We have a couple hundred thousand in a 529 for our high school student. Combined grandparents have about $200k and one side of grandparents is paying for a year of undergraduate studies directly. We are planning to fund undergrad and whatever is left to help with grad school. We currently use $10k for private tuition. We feel very lucky to not feel stressed about paying for college. Will be nice to pull from these funds and not pay the balance of $60k each year out of pocket, so to speak.

Would be interesting to know how much $$ did parents contribute fir their kids 529 vs grandparents’ contribution vs 529 was transferred from parent to child (funded by grandparents so many years ago). I am wondering should I overfund my kids 529 so the leftover can grow and then go to my grandkids ? We have no grandparents contributions for my kids 529 and I did not have a 529 with extra money.

How? if you max funded to the gift tax limit in 2017 that would have been $190k and would be worth $350k today . Did you additionally fund in 2023 and beyond?

We are also selling stock.

We were not high earners until about late elementary and made much more in stocks than a 529 would have. Even after taxes, not even close.

We have 500k for each kid- an 8 and 9 year old.

11 year old 550k. Hoping to not use most of it and pass down to grandkids.

And another useful feature of the 529: if your kids have symmetrical amounts of money in their 529s, but one of them will have higher expenses than the other, you can transfer the money from one kid’s account to the other’s.

We have a 7 year old and a 4 year old. We have about 300k total. Will probably add another 100k-200k.

A grandparent is contributing $15K per year into 529s for each of four grandkids.

This should provide about $350-$400K per kid by the time they get to college, depending upon market performance.

We intend to use some of it for private HS and college.

My tuition was included (and then taxed as income) and I had a stipend at 20h per week. Certainly not a livable wage.
