Deferred is better.

Deferred usually means if you applied EA, they will usually let you know by the RD decision round.

Waitlist is a soft no, unless things change and you may not get off the waitlist.

The CDS for each college has details on how many they accept from their waitlist in a given year. (Toward the back of the report)

3.5w from FCPS, 1200 SAT but test optional, had a rough sophomore year grades wise but has been improving since then. 8 APs total and good course rigor otherwise.

Pretty basic ECs and one part time job. Good recs we think and a decent essay but not amazing. Also went to the high school visit from the JMU admissions rep in the fall, and emailed one question regarding the application.

My DD goes go Yorktown HS in Arlington (high stats school) and several with good grades (3.8+) and 1300+ SATs did not get in. Crazy considering what you have do get for UVA and VT.

hs kid 2026 knows of some who got deferred this year though, and older kid knows of some who ultimately were rejected.
