If his best friend and then girlfriend were in a serious committed long term relationship at the time, I would be pretty disappointed in your husband (and best friend's girlfriend). They were in college, yes. But adults and know better than to sleep with each other.

My guess is that it was more a casually dating, on and off type thing and they were all not exclusive at that point. If that was the case - then not a big deal.
