Wrong. I was in Sweden once with a group of Europeans who all were making fun of the fact that USA citizens call themselves Americans. We look stupid.


Not all Americans are citizens.

Well, I was in Sweden "once," too, with a mixed group of Europeans and they all referred to me as an American.

I am Canadian. US citizens are Americans. We do not identify as Americans. Nor would we want to.

Totally disagree. I don't think it's stupid. What did they want us to call ourselves? One word answers only. I'm "from the United States" isn't as easy as saying I'm "American." United Statesers and United Statsians is idiotic.

I find people like you super tiresome. Are you under the impression that billions of people who refer to people from this country as Americans are just not aware of how many countries are on the two continents? There are plenty of things that you should legitimately be outraged by and this is not it.

It's simply liguistics, because United Statsian is a weird thing to say, so citizens of the USA became Americans. When you ask people what else to call us in one word, they can't come up with a single word.

In my experience, it's not so much that non-USA citizens of the Americas are offended when we refer to ourselves as "Americans." It's when we refer to our country as "America."
