Except sales no way an L5 is making 600, maybe an l7 or l8 or you do very well with rsus but after your four year contract your rsus get greatly reduced.

My spouse was work from home long before Covid then forced in 5 days a week. Funny though his supervisor in Seattle was clearly rarely in the office. They do track it. Regardless of how hard you work after a few years you will be cut at the 3-6 range. Few make it longer than that but most are cut at some point.

how do you transition to a $600k role from a Fed GS-14? Were you a data scientist at NIST or something?

AWS can be brutal. Most people do not last more than 2-3 years. You are constantly stack ranked. Constantly on the chopping block. Not worth it if lateral move money wise.

I'm a former Fed and also former Amazon who left this spring after 4 years. I would not recommend Amazon, putting it lightly. It's everything you've already heard here and morale is in the toilet right now across the board. I am glad I jumped off that ship as I almost certainly would have been fired this past summer or fall- most of my division was, including some of the 10+ year basically lifers. I would only even briefly consider it if you go in with the mentality that it will be a short and painful stint but worth it for beaucoup bucks, but doesn't sound like that's the case here.

US Patent Office is almost always hiring, but now is not a good time to go there. A lot of uncertainty exists there right now.

This. They will quietly track one's absence from office and then cite that later as cause for termination.
