My sophomore got a nice one in west coast through cold application. said key is to apply early, like within first couple of days of job opening.

It's tough out there. Has your DC volunteered? My DC just got an internship with an org she volunteered for in the past.

This was good advice about 30 years ago. My kids and all of their friends and all of my friends kids say the junior year internship is key.

They need to be hustling, it’s a lot of work. They should be using the career services, going to job fairs and other employer sponsored meetings at the university. The market is very tough for recent graduates, Having an internship is very helpful. My kid spent tons of time chasing internships this fall and now he has one lined up for this summer and another for summer 2027 with a different employer that hopefully will result in full time offer once he graduates.

I have never gotten a job by applying blindly. It’s all about networking, and kids don’t have many connections. You have to introduce them to people in your network.

DC has two internships back to back in the summer, both in Chicago. We are from the DC area, and DC goes to college no where near Chicago.

Last year they had an internship in the south, also no where near their college.

These internships either gave DC a stipend for airfare and housing or are offering free housing (in a very nice apartment).

A great way to get to know different parts of the country!

My kid is a sophomore at Cornell's hotel school. She hustled in October by going to career services and recruitment events. Consulted with professors and made sure to follow up with every interview. By November, she had offers from three hotels in high-end resort towns here in the US. Took the one with the big name. When I'm feeling cranky about tuition or the long drive to Ithaca, I remind myself to feel grateful that my kid has been afforded access and opportunities because of where she is going to school.

I hope that OP's kid and everyone else looking will land something soon.

Last year my kid was contacted and then offered their internship in early March. Turned into a permanent job offer for after graduation.

NRO still has paid summer internships for CS and engineering. Competitive. Must be US Citizen and have a clean criminal record. look online.

DD, Junior, landed her internship in Sept. Local F100 firm that you could probably figure out. She already had internship last summer at smaller agency as well as two on campus this year and last year as well as TA and Research Asst positions this year. She’s one of those kids.
