I think MCPS should pay subs time and a half for these sorts of days, like Virginia does.

MCPS parents are the best!

I haven’t read the responses by a love how there is a thread about parents not sending kids to school next week and now a thread started by a Pyle mommy horrified of teachers taking their accrued leave. It is embarrassing for all parents that this thread exists.

I’m so glad I don’t teach at Pyle and have to deal with parents like you. My students’ parents are understanding when I take my allotted sick or personal days, even when they’re right before or after winter break or spring break. A good teacher will always get through the curriculum.

I get having easy/review lessons or even playing movies, but to be already gone on vacation seems unprofessional.

Are you just a stay at home mommy? Stay in your lane.

Jealous that you have to work? Stay in your lane.

No reason why a teacher cannot travel at Christmas, but it does seem a bit absurd to take an entire week off given there is a longer holiday. We have several teachers out frequently and it ends up being they don't get through the curriculum.

+1 to the bolded. What makes it absurd is how much time teachers already get off. Even if you don't count the summer, the breaks during the year are about as much time as most people get off in a 12 month job. That's fine, but it feels like a very minimal expectation to say you need to be there on the days students are, unless you're sick. If my office were about to close for two weeks, I wouldn't be allowed to take the two days before that off. My boss and clients would object.

My family and my health will ALWAYS come first. I know we like to martyr our teachers because they should care more about their students than their own families, but many of us increasingly are putting ourselves first. And that’s a good thing because it’ll keep us from spectacularly burning out like so many of our colleagues before us.

Going to work on your scheduled days doesn't make you a martyr. You get two weeks off for Christmas which is more than most of us. It won't hurt your family or your health to go to work.

When i first started working (20+ years ago), it seemed like most educators did not take off right before or after a holiday or long weekend. I think the number doing this in recent years has increased. For so long, families were pulling their students out for travel needs. I think many teachers decided that they may as well do the same. I am not sure that I agree with it, but I can see both sides.

It was a long standing practice that teachers were not supposed to ask for days off at the beginning or end of a holiday/break. Admin didn't look favorably on it and you knew it could be rejected.

After COVID, this shifted, and people seem less willing to adhere to it. I wonder if it was due to the insane amount of coverage during their planning time many had to do during those years and people got fed up.

As long as they've secured a sub, and they have the leave, it gets approved now.

You mean the taxpayer lane?

Taxpayer doesn’t mean you have control of the school system.

Exactly. Teachers are also taxpayers. It’s not like they have much input!

DP. This seems like hyperbole. “Several” teachers out “frequently”? We don’t have that type of leave.
