Skiing in UT in December has always been a mixed bag. We have reservations for SLC for late January but both flight and lodging can be cancelled so we could choose not to go. Doubt we will though as we have only prepaid at one of the 3 places where we’ll be skiing. Our bigger trip will be in late March when we head to Whistler. Again we can cancel our flight (used miles) and lodging although we would lose 700 on prepaid lift tix. If we spent as much as your family I would do so for Feb/March out west.

We knew this was a risk and booked because it's when our kids can ski with us unless we wait until late March which is a risk too. ... We are still excited to get out of dodge but would love ideas for non-ski stuff in case there's really nothing to ski.

The natural history museum is absolutely fantastic.

I only ever go in the summer to see my brother, so my recommendations aren't geared towards winter outdoor activities, but.....

There's a lovely aquarium as well as a zoo in SLC. I've not done the natural history museum but I've heard good things. Olympic Oval had public skating times, and being able to say you went skating on an Olympic speed skating track is cool.

Utah Mammoth are home on Dec. 29 vs. Nashville. If you prefer minor league hockey, the Grizzlies are home Dec. 26-27. For NBA fans, the Jazz have a few home games over the holidays.[/quote]

Eh, you never know what large Mormo. family will have a pipe bust or a furnace go out and need a backup plan. If OP really doesn't want to go, it's worth a try.

This. We are big skiiers and never plan a US December ski trip.

Skiing is a risk any time though. You can generally work to guarantee there will be a base of snow based on location and timing but you can commit to a trip and have terrible conditions. Just part of ski trips if you're on a fixed school schedule.
