All three names are awful, but I've seen worse.

"My Ántonia, published in 1918, is a classic American novel by Willa Cather that tells the story of Ántonia Shimerda, a Bohemian immigrant girl, through the nostalgic memories of her childhood friend, Jim Burden, in late 19th-century Nebraska."

Bohemia = part of Czech Republic

Oh, how I love this book!

I also love Antonia. I don't like Karis -- no matter how it's spelled.

My initial reaction was that Karla is very '70s, but I can see it on a baby now. It's kind of cute.

I love Antonia. Like Karis. Dislike Karla (but probably mostly because of a personal association with a specific Karla).

That family has ruined the perception of K names.

I've lived in 6 countries. I've seen it spelled with a K, and I know they do that in some areas, but I don't like it. Our neighbor in Warsaw who had a Karla also had an Oliwia. Is Karla a legitimate spelling? Sure. Is Oliwia also a legitiimate spelling? Yes. But they are clunky and ugly in an English language dominant setting.

I'm doubling down on the Carla spelling.

And I'm sad for you that your world is limited to one in which you immediately assume someone who dislikes "Karla" must be...influenced by the Kardashians.

You seem to be forgetting the part where you said that spelling variants are misspellings and make the user seem illiterate. My whole argument was that misspellings and established spelling variants are not the same thing.

The OP asked for opinions, and I am simply stating what I have seen. In fact, someone earlier in this thread stated, "and Karla is a name for someone born in the 1940-1950's. Except you Kardashianed it by slapping a K on instead of a C." I stand by the fact that many people now dislike legitimate K names and think they're misspellings because of the Kardashian's tacky K theme.

The six countries poster is not the Karis is a name for illiterates poster. We are two separate posters.

Frankly, this *is* a misspelling of the name. It’s awful and makes the user seem illiterate, like using Skyler for Schuyler, or Jillian for Gillian.

Are you trolling? Some names have more than one accepted spelling which can vary based on region. Jillian is a legitimate and accepted spelling. If you think otherwise, then I would love to know your take on Sarah vs. Sara, Teresa vs. Theresa, and Rebecca vs. Rebekah.

The name was originally Gillian and it's very common in the UK. Americans started spelling it "Jillian" because they were worried people wouldn't pronounce it with a soft G. It's a total dumbing down of the name.

Karla will never be spelled right. Hi I'm Carla with a K.

The OP should definitely push for Annie to be the nn if she goes with Antonia. Toni just sounds so manly and harsh.

I know a Charis and have seen it spelled Carys. I think it is very pretty. I wouldn’t use your spelling.

Six countries and likely monolingual. Do you only socialize with other American expats through the State Department or military? Did you ever figure out that w in Polish sounds like a v? Same in German. I love how everyone on DCUM purports to be so international yet can’t handle any name that is non Anglo in origin. Maybe OPs daughter won’t run in the provincial circles of the Mid-Atlantic suburbs.

I like the name Antonia best. I like Karis but use the C spelling. Not the biggest fan of Karla/Carla.

I'm not with Dep of State or military. I interact widely among local communities in my sphere, and weeks go by sometimes without seeing a single other American expat, actually. I speak four languages fluently, other than English, thanks.

My point remains. Karla looks clunky and ugly in English to me. Carla is fine.

Are you Anne Applebaum? Oh wait, she only speaks three languages. Or maybe Natalia Brzezinski? I thought she got divorced though.

I didn't say that. You are confusing me with another poster.
